Bompastor: Lack of energy no excuse for Chelsea’s slip-up at West Ham

Sonia Bompastor said that the “crazy” schedule of Chelsea cannot be used as an excuse to throw away a 2-0 lead against West Ham.

The hammers only became the third team that achieved Chelsea points in the Super League of the Women's Super League, while they are curbing back to get an unlikely draw on Sunday.

Shekiera Martinez rose twice for West Ham, with her equalizer in the 91st minute, after Chelsea had raced in an early 2-0 lead with thanks to goals from Maika Hamano and Agnes Beever-Jones.

Chelsea had not signed their previous 90 WSL matches in which they had led more than one goal.

The Sunday game was HOT on the heels of Chelsea Die Manchester City defeated 3-0 in the Women's Champions League to complete a 3-2 comeback victory.

The blues had played eight times in four weeks, including four consecutive meetings with City in three games, but Bompastor did not want to use fatigue as an excuse.

She told Sky Sports: “This block of competitions was crazy. Eight games in 28 days.

“We traveled a lot, we played four games in a row against Manchester City where the players left everything on the field.

“It is difficult to have the energy, but at Chelsea we have sufficient depth and quality to finish this block with luminaires with a better result.

“We have admitted too many situations defensively, but if you look at the larger whole, we are six points ahead of the second placed team.

“Every team would like to be in our position.”

Chelsea rises to the WSL title and, despite the slip-up, remain six points free of Arsenal and Manchester United with four more games.

If they win each of their remaining league matches, they will surpass the record points in a single WSL season (58, set by Chelsea in 2022-23), while they strive to become the sixth other team that a WSL or Spring Series campaign has been unbeaten since the Blues in 2019-20.

Bompastor spoke with the media channels of Chelsea: “It is clearly frustrating. I think if you analyze the game – even thought I have not looked back on the game – I think we have created many opportunities. In the first half, especially in the first 30 minutes, we might have scored three or four goals.

“I think if we could do that, especially in the first 30 minutes, the game would be over. But again, I think I already said that in some earlier games, if you can't be clinical enough, you just give some hope to the opposition, especially in the last 15 minutes of the first half.

“We dropped the intensity a bit and admitted the goal because we were not involved enough of a slaughter. And the second half was not good enough in terms of performance on our part.”

Bompastor is supported by the competition statistics, where Chelsea has 24 shots and collects 2.53 expected goals.

However, only eight of those attempts, worth 0.73 xg, came after the break.

After the international break, Chelsea is confronted with Liverpool in the Women's FA Cup-Halve Final, before they compete against Barcelona in the first stage of their semi-final of the Champions League.
