Bompastor revels in ‘unreal’ Chelsea title win

Sonia Bompastor says that the Women's Super League title of Chelsea feels “a bit unreal” after they have achieved the top position with a victory over Manchester United.

Chelsea only needed one point against the Red Devils after Arsenal opened the door with a 5-2 loss for Aston Villa earlier on Wednesday.

And the blues took their chance, with Lucy Bronze on their way to win a 1-0 win in Leigh Sports Village and to close a sixth consecutive WSL title for the club, and a ninth in general.

The inaugural WSL season, when Laura Harvey's Arsenal won the title, Bompastor is the first manager to win the competition in her first campaign.

They remain unbeaten this season in the competition, with this victory that sets a new record for the most successive games unbeaten in a single WSL campaign (20).

Bompastor had taken over from Emma Hayes at the end of last season and had large shoes to fill, but is happy with the performance of the team at the helm in its first year.

“It's a great achievement. It feels a bit unreal,” Bompastor told Sky Sports. “I knew we had to fight until the end.

“For us to still be unbeaten and to achieve what we have just achieved is really good.

“Not easy to come as a new manager of a new country to adapt to a new competition. I have learned a lot, but I have a large number of players and great staff.

“This competition is really competitive. For some people they just think that Chelsea is, it's very easy to achieve that. It is not.

“We work very hard. We had the right mindset from the start of the season to now. I am really happy with that, I am really happy with that.”

In this game, the blues came on the back of their semi-final exit from Champions League, which were eliminated 8-2 on aggregate by Barcelona.

With this victory, however, they moved to 54 points in the competition, and if they can win their last two games, against Tottenham and Liverpool, they will determine the record points in total in one WSL season (currently 58, determined by Chelsea itself in 2022-23).

“I feel great. It feels great for my first season,” she told BBC Sport. “I want to thank my players; I want to thank the club to be on board.

“For us to achieve that with two more games is a great achievement.

'I like to be busy [of replacing Hayes]. It makes me a better manager because I really have to concentrate.

“I have to thank my staff because I'm not the only one. I feel at home, it's so nice to be part of Chelsea.”

Bompastor's Blues also has a FA Cup final to look forward to. They will compete against United on May 18.
