Bonucci urges Juventus to back Motta or bring in Conte

Juventus has to support head coach Thiago Motta or bring in former boss Antonio Conte to replace him, according to the former Bianceri defender Leonardo Bonucci.

Juve suffered an “ugly” 4-0 defeat at Atalanta last weekend, only their second loss in the Serie A this season.

Nevertheless, the Bianconeri is fourth in the table – nine points behind leaders Inter – while they crashed from the Champions League in the knock -out phase -playoff against PSV.

Their Coppa Italia defense also ended last month in the quarter-final phase, after the defeat by Empoli about penalties, with Motta subsequently pressed.

It is now five years since Juve won their last Scudetto, which was also won the last of eight by Bonucci with the Bianconeri during his decorated career.

The first three Scudetti to win the former Italy defender came under Conte between 2012 and 2014.

Bonucci, who has also made more than 500 performances for Juve, believes that the club should lure the current Napoli boss to the Allianz Stadium at the end of the season.

As an alternative, if the current regime of Motta and sports director Cristiano Giuntoli remains, the 37-year-old warned that the head coach should do more than just saying that he was “sad and disappointed” by the Atalanta result.

“With Atalanta we fooled ourselves,” Bonucci told La Gazzetta Dello Sport. “It hurt my heart. I don't think such a thing ever happened, an ugly scene.

“The emotions of the fans must be respected. The atmosphere of the last games explains pressure on those who have little experience and leadership. I hope it returns to the extra element that has characterized so many victories.”

He added about the future of Motta: “It depends on the objectives of the club that invested in some players in the summer, but also in young players they have improved.

“If you want to win immediately, in June, you change and take conte, otherwise you give Motta and Giuntoli the time to create the foundations to return to winning ways.

“Thiago Motta must learn that coaching Juve is a world apart. Saying that you are sad and disappointed is not enough.”
