In the weekend that Rivals Liverpool could match their record of 20 top flight triumphs, United seemed to drop to another defeat of history with their fall from the grace that hit a new low point.
Match report
After Antoine Semenyo's 23rd minutes strike in Europe-Chasing Bournemouth, the men of Ruben Amorim were on course for their sixteenth defeat of the campaign-a scoop in the Premier League era and the first time in 35 years.
Fortune, however, seems to favor the sadness. Evanilson's hard 70th minute sent the visitors the momentum when Rasmus Hojlund bundled up close in a 96th minute Leveler.
The cheers in the end was wild, but perhaps only for the show. The state of United remains gloomy, in the 14th and a world away from life on Merseyside at the moment – a team that actually has a reason to celebrate.
Baas Amorim and shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, in the stands in the Vitality Stadium, should be more concerned about himself.
It is laughable that United in the most terrible liverpool seasons could still emulate by lifting silverware this season, but Baas Amorim still dreams of that with a European League semi-final first stage in Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.
Not that Bilbao should worry. Bournemouth was not, and Andoni Iraola will earn his side a valuable three points that would have brought them to the steering place for continental football. Instead, there is still a mountain to climb with four more games.
Harry Maguire spoke pre-match about the similarities between Bilbao's playing style and those of Bournemouth, making this the perfect European warming in the south coast sun.
That is why Amorim opted for strength instead of security-five changes from the Wolves defeat with Big-Hitters Maguire, Leny Yoro, Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes back.
There was also a rare start for Luke Shaw – his first since the defeat of England in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain in July – who would turn out to be a strict test of his fitness after a series of frustrating muscle issues that seriously hindered him this period.
To be further protected, Shaw was left of a back three with Patrick Dorgu at Wing-Back-a necessity now with Diogo Dalot excluded for the rest of the campaign with a calf problem.
For any other side this would be a good time to go to vitality, the cherries who suffer from a sad form of only two Prem victories of their last ten to drop off the Sprint finish for a top five Champions League place.
But as the saying reads, this is Manchester United, one that on average slightly above one point a game under Amorim and with only 17 points removed this term, only Tottenham and the degraded bottom three gather so far.
You cannot blame Amorim for life in the future when the present is so gloomy. This is a dead dog of a season that is desired by a painful week during the week, while United continues to scream in Europe, how imaginative and unlikely that it looks now.
But because preparations go for a gigantic two-legged draw against Bilbao currently in the La Liga Top four behind the three giants of the division of the division, which Amorim learned very little, but confirmed a hell of many he already knew.
Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho had attempts that kept Kepa but not surprised. In the meantime, the hosts were patient, waiting for a moment to catch a weak opponent.
It came through some fortune. Tyler Adams left the ground and planted one of his studs in the ankle of Garnacho just outside the box of United and took a yellow for his problems.
In real time it looked filthy. Repeats confirmed that it was, one that usually ends in a resignation, but VAR left the American midfielder after the shortest checks.
Andre Onana stood over the free kick and decided that his best bet was to put his team pressure after a stop in the game, to go sideways to Magire and then to Dorgu, who was earned in the softest of matches.
The cross was reversed by Evanilson and Semenyo stored the offer with a vibrant effort beyond Onana.
Bought for £ 10 million and now coupled with a mega-move this summer for about £ 70 million, the graduated Bristol City Academy is a grim memory of United of developing a player and making him better.
United seems to be elite in the opposite with the person walking through the door at Old Trafford, which is why Semenyo will think more than twice if the Red Devils come to call within a few months.
Amorim's response on his side that went after again was muted and emotionless. Casemiro took his anger on Evanilson through his studs on the chest of his countryman.
Garnacho was the brightest of a vague group for the visitors, hit the offside trap and almost lobbed a touching kepa, but for the fingertips of the Spaniard.
Another shot from the Argentinian wing player was won wide. The peace was hardly a welcome relief with United who won only one of their 21 Prem Away matches in which they have left in the last four seasons – the last in December.
So it made sense when Amorim's men sleeped in the second half and allowed Semenyo to curl an inner centimeters from the upper corners after just 70 seconds.
Dango Ouattara then hit the post of a free kick, but the game changed when Evanilson slid into a sliding challenge at Noussair Mazraoui in the 68th minute.
Two minutes and a VAR check and monitory review later, upgrade Peter Bankes it yellow to red – after he also booked one of Iraola's coaching staff for collision with United's bench.
United caution throwing the wind, finally, United looked dangerous. Mason Mount missed a Sitter, blocked by Milos Kerkez and Bruno Fernandes hit the side.
And then the cross of Shaw was diverted by Manuel Ugarte and stabbed home by Hojlund – only his second united goal since December.
