Bright leaves England camp due to mental and physical burnout

England -defender Millie Bright has said that she has withdrawn from the team because of reaching her mental and physical boundaries.

It was announced on Monday by the Football Association (FA) that Bright had left the team and took “a longer period of recovery”, called up with Lotte Wubben-Moy as her replacement.

Bright played in 21 of Chelsea's 22 Women's Super League games in 2024-25, with only Hannah Hampton (1,980) played more minutes than the defender (1,823) in the team.

In all competitions she made 36 performances for the blues this season when they claimed a domestic Treble.

Speaking about her podcast 'Daly Brightness', which she, together with the former teammate of England Rachel Daly, spoke Bright about the reasons for her withdrawal.

“That is really a difficult decision, but I think you also know better than anyone else – sometimes you just have to take that time for yourself.

“You have to appreciate yourself and your mental health and body, and just say that no, now is not the moment for you now.”

England, who are also without Mary Earps after the keeper's shock on Tuesday, plays Portugal on 30 May and Spain on 3 June.

The lion ribbons are currently second in group A3, two points behind Spain after four games.
