Brighton have made a bid of around £23million for Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis as the club look to bring in new reinforcements during the January transfer window.
The 18-year-old is regarded as one of the best defensive players in South America and is attracting interest from a host of clubs from across Europe and the Premier League.
Brighton has had a strong first half of the season under new manager Fabian Hurzeler. The club is currently tenth in the Premier League and has ambitions to move up the rankings.
They are now targeting a move for Reis, who has impressed after breaking into the Palmeiras first team, with the Brazilian youngster making 18 appearances in Serie A this season.
However, the two clubs are currently adrift in their valuation, with Brighton's latest offer falling short of the £25 million minimum fee Palmeiras are demanding.
The Seagulls are believed to have already rejected two bids for the youngster, who has also been linked with moves to Arsenal, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
The 18-year-old can play as either a right-back or a central defender in defence, but has starred in his favored central position
Palmeiras were previously keen to keep hold of the talented defender until after the Club World Cup later this year, but Brighton want the rising star to join in January.
One possible option could be for the two clubs to reach a deal in January and loan Reis out until the end of the season.
