Bronze confident Chelsea can give Bompastor more next season

Lucy Bronze is convinced that Chelsea can increase things a level in their second season under Sonia Bompastor, after he has won the super league of the ladies closer to the Treble.

Chelsea defeated 1-0 on Wednesday with 1-0 by the header of Bronze, a result that meant that they had the title with two games after Arsenal lost 5-2 in Aston Villa earlier in the day.

It is the sixth straight WSL crown of the blues and they are still watching an unbeaten campaign in the competition.

Wednesday's victory established a record for the most successive matches unbeaten in a single WSL season (20), and victories in their remaining games against Tottenham and Liverpool would see them breaking their own WSL point record (58, in 2022-23, currently 54).

Chelsea also won the League Cup in March and will come together again with United for the FA Cup final on May 18, although their Champions League campaign crashed with an 8-2 total defeat against Barcelona in the semi-final last week.

Although bronze is satisfied with the domestic efforts of the blues, she knows that improvements in Europe should be their goal for the next term.

The full-back said to Sky Sports: “We had a season up and down, although the results probably won't show that.

“It was difficult for Sonia to come in and build something while it didn't try to remove the inheritance that Chelsea has always had.

“We have also had new signing sessions. Next season we can continue and improve much more.

“The second half of the season that we have not been to our best. Sonia has done well so far, but she wants a lot more of us. I think we can give it to her.”

In three straight Champions League campaigns, Chelsea had semi-final outputs in the hands of Barcelona and they also lose in the 2021 final under Emma Hayes.

“It's hard to concentrate on so many competitions,” Bronze continued. “We have always said that. We have done fantastic to keep ourselves in the end of the end.

“It was nice to come here to have a victory, the title and to go ahead and beyond the disappointment of the weekend.”

Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton reflected those feelings and told BBC Sport: “The draw was not the face of Chelsea that we want to show everyone.

“You could see that we were not ourselves and we did not play as a team. We did not get through to the final. That is a goal of our next season, let's be honest, we want to beat Barca.

“To come here today and win the WSL with two games to save, the character and the resilience of this team show.”

Despite their European disappointment, Chelsea could complete the Interior Treble for the second time, because he had done this in 2020-21, and bronze that challenge.

Bronze said: “Yes, sure. The exciting thing is that it is also against United. They are a tough team, they have fought hard tonight and are still fighting for things in the competition.

“We will be confronted with them in two weeks at Wembley, it should be an exciting game. We look forward to it.”
