Bruno Fernandes says he could leave Man Utd to assist club in funding rebuild

Bruno Fernandes has offered to leave Manchester United if the club has to cash him in to rebuild after the heartache of their Europa League -defined defeat by Tottenham.

United lost 1-0 in Bilbao on Wednesday to a goal of Brennan Johnson and a miserable season for the club.

Manager Ruben Amorim said after the defeat that if the club no longer wanted him, he would stop “without any conversation about compensation”.

Now his captain, 30, has followed himself, aware of the need of United to a revision of the play staff despite financial limitations.

“I have always been honest. I have always said that I will be here until the club tells me it is time to go,” Fernandes said.

“I would like to do more to be able to take the club to the great days. On the day the club thinks I'm too much or it's time to separate, football is that way, you never know.

“But I have always said it and I keep my word in the same way. If the club thinks it's time to separate because they want to come up with some money or whatever, it is what it is and football is sometimes so.”

Fernandes is the striking player of United for United this season, but has had no impact on Spurs in the San Mames Stadium.

'Very sad day'

He said the defeat was a crushing blow.

“We wanted to win more than anything in this final,” he said. “It's a very sad day because we have done some very good things in this competition until today.

“But today (Wednesday) was the day that mattered, the most important day of the competition. It was the day that we could have been in the history of the Europa League, but it is not that. And football is cruel, and it was our turn to lose.”

The midfielder, who came to United in 2020, insisted that his countryman Amorim was still the right man to lead United, despite a terrible record since he had arrived in Old Trafford in November.

United has only won six league games on his watch and his 16th in the Premier League, intended for their lowest finish since the relegation in 1974.

“We (the players) just agree that he is the right man,” said Fernandes. “He has done many good things. We know that the manager is being viewed by the results.

“Of course we see more than that as players. We know that it will be for everyone that he will be about reducing positivity to the club.

“To try to bring the club back to fight for trophies, fight for the big trophies. And we all agree that he is the right man.”
