Manchester United takes on Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening, in which boss Ruben Amorim admits that they play for more than just a trophy when they meet in Bilbao
Ruben Amorim knows that Manchester United will play more than Europa League Glory tonight when they are facing Tottenham. This season, United has passed a season of unrest on and next to the field and lost 18 games in the Premier League to be in 16th place in the table.
Outside the field, the ruthless cost savings of Sir Jim Ratcliffe went through, with up to 250 more jobs, in addition to the 200 dismissed in United last year, as part of the Drive to make the club sustainable.
Not beating Spurs tonight and securing Champions League football for next season would see United miss at around £ 100 million in income and can therefore lead to further job losses.
Against that background, United Baas Amorim knows that there is more at stake for him and his players in Bilbao than personal glory on the field.
Amorim said: “I always play for more than myself. I coach for my players, for my staff, and especially for our fans
“We are doing things [at United] That we have to do. For example, I came from the club that, to survive and to maintain players, you must be in Champions League. This is not the case.
“Our club can have income without the Champions League. It's a big club, it's a huge club, with many fans around the world. It's a big brand, so we just have to be focused and do things in the right way.”
“We must be enthusiastic and confident [for the final] But we already know the problems. There are many things we have to change in our club. The way we do everything during the week in Carrington, the recruitment, the academy, I think we should improve. It is therefore difficult to point out one thing and say that it will be resolved by winning a cup.
“I will say it again – for me we have bigger things to go with than that, to put this club back to the top. The final is important to us, for our fans, because that feeling of winning can help us have the power to do every job we have to do. So we have a lot to do in our club, not just winning here.
“But winning will be huge for us and our fans.”
