Burn in dreamland after Newcastle’s EFL Cup triumph

Then Burn felt like he was dreaming after scoring the opening goal for Newcastle United in their 2-1 EFL Cup final victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

The defender scored in the peace to put Newcastle on the front, with Alexander Isak who got their second just after the break to conquer their first domestic trophy in 70 years.

Although Federico Chiesa set up a nerve finish by withdrawing one in the stopping time, the Newcastle did not stop from lifting their first large piece of domestic silverware since the FA Cup 1955.

Burn, who received his first England call-up last week, only became the second Newcastle player who scored in an EFL Cup final, after Alan Gowling against Manchester City in 1976.

And as a Newcastle fan in Newcastle, Burn in Dreamland was after the end of the club's trophy.

“Not bad. I have had worse weeks! I have the feeling that I am dreaming,” he told Sky Sports.

'I knew Alexis [Mac Allister] I didn't look, so I could make a jump on him. As soon as I led it, I knew it was in it. I don't get much, so at least I saved it for a great occasion!

“I feel strange. It's hard to put into words.”

Isak made his 100th Newcastle performance in the showpiece in Wembley and scored his 58th goal for the club in all competitions.

Under all Premier League players, only Erling Haaland (113) and Mohamed Salah (84) have scored more since the debut of Isak in August 2022.

He was the striking artist, with the most shots (three) when he generated 1.04 expected goals (XG), more than any other player.

Isak also excluded a goal for offside, only a few minutes before he yielded the second goal of Newcastle, but the Swede greeted Burn for his impressive performance at both ends of the field.

“It was his [Dan Burn’s] game. He is brilliant: “Isak told Sky Sports.” If he can score goals, then it is great, but it's the way he defends. That lays the foundation for us. “

Burn made a Game-High 11 clearance and won seven of his nine duels.

Think about his goal, Isak said: “This game is about moments, and it's not about being really good as a striker, but it is about being scoring when needed.

“The first half was a bit frustrating for me, but I kept telling myself that my moment would come.”

The last trip from Newcastle to Wembley saw them a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United suffering in the EFL Cup final of 2022-23, but after having corrected their mistakes from that match, Isak is enthusiastic about what the magpies can do below.

“This is actually just the beginning. We will see more of the fans and what it means for the people when we come back to Newcastle,” he added.

“We are all aware of how long it has been for the fans without a trophy.

“If you've been without a trophy for so long, it can be in mind, but hopefully we won this, they are clear days for us.”
