Burnley’s surprise arrival Edwards fires up Championship promotion charge

Perhaps the biggest surprise about Burnley's aimless draw on Tuesday evening in Derby was that it was in fact a surprise.

Rake a few months ago and the clarets had become synonymous with the stalemate. They have 12 this season.

But the last for their trip to Pride Park came back in mid -February. The arrival of Marcus Edwards had almost made them look like the past.

Despite only one goal and one so far, his presence helps the clarets in a much more powerful attacking threat.

In his six earlier consecutive starts, Burnley scored 16 times. That is good for almost 30 percent of the goals they have looted throughout the season.

It was a shock to say the least when he came on loan in January. He had been excellent in Sporting for several years and already played in the Champions League in November.

However, after he found himself out of favor after injuries and the departure of Ruben Amorim, he ended up with Turf Moor in search of football in the first team.

He helped to change Burnley from a side that looked as if they could play in the Promoter's race in the Promotierce's, to bring them into a real statement from an immediate return to the Premier League.

Sherwood on Edwards: I am surprised that Amorim did not go for him at Man Utd

Tim Sherwood was part of the coaching staff of Tottenham when Edwards came through the club's academy. He admits that he was always surprised, Spurs let him go.

“I remember that I saw this boy with a large load of hair, this little left foot and a great balance,” Sherwood tells Sky Sports. “I just had to go down and talk to the academy managers and asking:” Who is this boy? “

“They told me it was Marcus Edwards and he was in Spurs since he was about six years old. I had a great interest in him. Every time they were inside, I made sure I never missed it.

“I was shocked when he left the club. I felt that he needed a little more time because he was small. But maybe he hit without patience and wanted to continue his own career.

“He went to Portugal and it really worked out for him. Now he is back at Burnley and it was a huge coup for them in the championship.

“Scott [Parker] In the past came to see many sessions and did something on it when I was at Spurs. He would have seen Marcus then and had seen the talent there was. He clearly has a very good memory!

“He enjoyed his time at Sporting under Ruben Amorim. Man Utd has a number of worse players than Marcus Edwards at the moment, let me tell you.

“I am a bit surprised that, given the money we are talking about, Ruben didn't have a bit of a gamble on him.

“Maybe they had players in the team where they did not want to block the path. But he knows the boy from within.

“I think he is a very special talent. It helps if you have a left foot and you are grown, with that center of gravity, balance and how he changes direction. He has that small eruption of the goal of the goal. He is so pleasant in mind.”

Fan view: Edwards helped us to shake 'Boring Burnley' tag

Jacob Horsfall – Burnley Fan YouTube Channel

“This season Burnley is often branded with the tag 'Boring Burnley'. But since Edwards has arrived, football has become much more fun and the general attacking product is so much better.

“The team is from wrestling to converting profits, to being able to find a way to get three points on a much regular basis.

“Before he arrived, teams could sit deeper, double on Jaidon Anthony and stop CJ Egan-Rley to play long switches in broad areas.

“But now with Edwards on the other flank, we now have more than one way to break down a defense. His ability to drive in, to attack and overdo defenders will then give Anthony space on the other in one-VS one and creating holes for our other midfielders.

“He may not be directly involved in every goal, but only his presence creates opportunities for his teammates.”
