Cameras catch Salah’s wife Magi’s reaction as Egyptian star misses penalty
Mohamed Salah's wife was as surprised as the rest of Anfield when the Egyptian star missed a penalty in Liverpool's win over Real Madrid, as she was caught on camera reacting to his scuffed strike.
The two European giants faced off in the Champions League on Wednesday night, in a repeat of the 2018 and 2022 finals, but the Reds looked a class above their Spanish opponents.
Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo were on target for Arne Slot's men, who are enjoying a dream first season under the Dutchman and lead both the Premier League and the Champions League.
And despite Kylian Mbappe seeing his penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher when the score was still 1-0, Madrid never really looked like they would take anything from the match as their poor form in Europe continued.
In fact, the scoreline could have been even better for the Reds as Salah himself won a penalty minutes later with a ringing run that fooled Ferland Mendy but missed the resulting penalty.
The 32-year-old had scored six penalties in a row before Wednesday's poor effort, last losing to Tanzania in January, and his wife Magi was as shocked as anyone when he poked the ball wide of the left post.
Magi, 30, is rarely seen at matches and chooses to keep a lower profile than some celebrity footballers' partners, but he looked animated in the Anfield stands with the couple's children.
The biotechnician jumped up and down as her husband ran over to take the penalty, presumably expecting the net to bulge after another strike from Salah, but soon had her head in her hands as he lifted it from the goal declined.
Liverpool were well worth their first win over Real since 2009 as they dominated the entire match and kept generational talents Mbappe and Jude Bellingham free for almost the entire match.
When asked whether his team is currently the best in Europe, Slot answers: 'The players here have been almost used to playing in a final for a long time, this team has always been there.
“The last two years may have been different, but it was just a few adjustments and we are only five games into a new format. We are happy where we are, but we cannot get carried away with winning a group match. This club wants more.'
The only downside of the evening was the injuries to Ibrahima Konate and the excellent 21-year-old Conor Bradley, who kept Mbappe quiet and then provided the assist for Mac Allister's opener.
Salah once again starred for the Reds despite his missed penalty, once again proving his importance to Slot's side as speculation grows over his future.
The Egyptian's contract expires at the end of this season and he claimed in a shocking interview that there are no new offers on the table from Anfield chiefs.
The 32-year-old forward made a rare chat with Mail Sport and a small group of other reporters after scoring twice in the 3-2 win over Southampton, where he said he was 'more out than in' and criticized the club .
Speaking about his contract break, Salah said: 'We are almost in December and I have not yet received any offers to stay at the club.
'I'm probably outside more than inside. You know I've been at the club for years.
'There is no such club. But ultimately it's out of my hands. Like I said, it's December and I haven't received anything about my future yet.
'I love the fans. The fans love me. Ultimately it is not in my hands, nor in the hands of the fans.'
