Canada victorious and Mexico beaten in six-goal thrillers ahead of Gold Cup

Canada warmed up for the Gold Cup with an impressive 4-2 friendly victory over Canada in Toronto on Saturday, while Mexico went to Switzerland with the same score.

The start of the Canada Gold Cup camp was overshadowed by three of the internationals of the Vancouver Whitecaps who fell ill in the aftermath of their Concacaf Champions Cup final defeat against Club America.

That led Jesse Marsch to claim that the Whitecaps camp was the target of “poisoning”, but his players showed no adverse consequences against Ukraine.

Canada's Record Goalscorer, Jonathan David, hit home twice in the first 24 minutes and tapped home after a goalmouth-scramble and then sent and sent a logo heads in the top left corner from the corner of Tajon Buchanan.

Promising David added a third 31 minutes to his debut in Canada, in which he ended the Valerii Bondar of Ukraine and then finished cool under Anatolii Trubin.

Buchanan hit home nine minutes of the time while Canada continued to put their opponents in the sword, although Illia Zabarnyi and Oleksandr Zinchenko made the score more respectable with late goals for Ukraine.

One of the most important rivals of Canada in the Gold Cup, Mexico, was at the wrong end of another six-goal thriller, against Switzerland in Salt Lake City.

Switzerland hit a strong team and went on when Breel Embolo Raul Rangel surrounded to tap an empty net after 20 minutes, the only goal of the first half.

At the start of the second period, Santiago Gimenez from AC Milan is the same with a filthy header, but replacement Zeki Amdouni soon wiped the house to restore Switzerland's lead.

Bologna's Coppa Italia hero Dan Ndoye expanded the visitors' lead, and although Angel Sepulveda shot in the nearby pole to bring it 3-2, Fabian Rieder completed the score in the 90th minute.

Canada opens their Gold Cup campaign against Honduras in Vancouver on 17 June, three days after Mexico is confronted with the Dominican Republic in the opening match of the tournament.

Data Debrief: Gimenez ends in the defeat for a long time

Gimenez's goal was his first for Mexico since he hit the winner in the Gold Cup final of 2023 against Panama, ending a point of 13 international performances without a score.

Mexico could have few complaints about their defeat, with Switzerland registering more shots (15 to 10) and expected goals (1.81 to 1.13 xg) than El Tri.

The collision of Canada with Ukraine was even more fascinating, where the Marsch team generated opportunities worth 2.47 xg for the 2.21 of their visitors.

Davids Brace brought him to 34 in 62 performances for his country. The striker, who has several lovers after leaving Lille as a free agent, is on average 0.55 goals per match for Canada.
