The sold-out Wembley final of Sunday has closed a good season for Carabao Cup-Gendenigen.
The figure of more than 1.7 million paying gamblers during the competition was highest since the change in format in 2001-02 and rose by 20 percent compared to last season.
The fact that the collision between Newcastle and Liverpool for the first time in more than a decade for the first time in more than a decade was delighted EFL officials who expected a boost in public figures.
The game, who won the Magpies 2-1 to end their 70-year-old waiting for a domestic trophy, was broadcast for free on ITV.
In an electric atmosphere at the National Stadium, the side of Eddie Howe achieved a deserved victory after goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.
Howe praised his team after the game and said: 'They all had different journeys to get to this point, but we met like a team.
'I like to work with them every day. I am honored to be their leader.
'And for the supporters, who came in there today thousands who supported us at home. Since I visited the football club, the support we have at home and gone has been incredible. So I'm just so happy that they have this trophy to end the long wait.
“And hopefully we can get a little more in the future.”
Reds boss Arne Slot, however, refused to concentrate on the negatives and instead pointed to the 12-point lead from his side at the top of the Premier League.
Slot said: 'It took us seven months to lose twice in a row and it happened against two teams – one fights for Champions League places and the other is PSG.
'At the moment PSG is probably the best team in Europe, but I want to make clear, the week started really well through our Southampton, so the lead is 12 points.
'You know that if you continue in tournaments that the opposition becomes stronger and stronger. And even Liverpool can lose games.
'It is 70 years since they last won a trophy, but that is for the fans. The players have 15 years to play football and they want to win every trophy for which they play, and that is what we want.
'They got some extra energy with the goal that they probably deserved, so I don't think there was more hunger for them. The game went the way they wanted. '
