Carragher criticizes Amorim assertion that his Man U team is ‘WORST in history’

Jamie Carragher has hit back at Ruben Amorim's 'bizarre' claims that his Man United side are 'arguably the worst in the club's history'.

The Manchester United boss made the surprise admission after their 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, which left them 13th in the Premier League.

With six defeats in 12 in M16, this is the worst start to a home season for the club in 131 years and Amorim did not hide from an 'unacceptable' start.

However, Carragher questioned the merits of Amorim's claims and insisted it could spell more trouble for the United boss.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher said: 'I think it was one of the most bizarre and ridiculous things I've ever heard a manager say. Why you make such a comment.

'That's the kind of comment an expert would make, and he would have to defend it. I don't know what he achieves with that, what the advantage is. We all know it's a poor Manchester United team.

“He just blew something up, a quote that will haunt him for the rest of the season. He told the journalists there: 'I gave you your heads'; I will never know why you would want to do that as a manager.'

'I don't have much sympathy for the players in the Manchester United dressing room, they have been a joke for a few years.

'A few weeks ago, after they played Liverpool, there was an interview with Lisandro Martinez where he talked about the mentality and tapped him on the head.

'I almost burst out laughing when I honestly saw how many times Manchester United have essentially thrown in the towel with poor performances over the last four or five years.

'From a manager's perspective, how can he go into the dressing room between now and the end of the season and continually build them up and give them confidence, when he says they are one of the worst teams in the history of Manchester United.

'I would be very surprised if the powers above him do not have a strong word against him. You can't speak like that as a manager of Manchester United. You don't pour gasoline on the flames.'

After the defeat to Brighton, Amorim told reporters: 'We are perhaps the worst team in the history of Manchester United.

'I say that because we need to recognize that and change it. Here you go: your headlines.

'It is unacceptable to lose so many games. For every Premier League club, so imagine Manchester United?

'The opponents are better than us in many details. I'm just here to help my players, but we have to understand that we're breaking all the bad records.

'In ten games in the Premier League we have won two. I know that. Imagine what this is like for a United fan. Imagine what this is for me. We get a new coach who loses more than the previous coach. I am fully aware of that.'

Carragher later continued, saying: 'I don't know why he said that. He had a sort of grin on his face when he said that. It was as if he knew the magnitude of his words. I have no time for this Manchester United team.

'I have been following them for four or five years with different managers. I don't know what he's trying to do. Manchester United lost a match at home to Brighton.

Amorim warned that the worst may be yet to come as he will not change his tactics.

“I knew it would be difficult to come up with a completely new idea at this point, but when you lose games it becomes very difficult,” he added.

“So that's why I'm telling you that we will suffer, because I will continue to do the same thing. I'm not going to change, no matter what happens.'

Following the defeat to Brighton, former Red Devils captain Rio Ferdinand selected three United stars to be sold in January if the club are to improve their dismal start to the season.

The players brought to Ferdinand's attention on his Rio Presents podcast were Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia.

Speaking about the trio, the ex-England international said: “I think Antony is going, someone said to me: Real Betis or something like that. Just take them out man!

'Sorry, no, I'm just being honest. The more guys like this are around, where there's just a bad noise, they all want to go, they're all happy to go – let's just get them out. Let's start again.

“You know how it is: when there are people who are restless and things don't go according to plan and they're not happy, it spreads. It's like a cancerous, bad energy.”
