Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester City has made the right decision by having Kevin De Bruyne leave the club this summer.
De Bruyne, 33, confirmed last month that he will move from the city at the end of the season and end his 10-year stay in the Etihad.
The six-time Premier League winner has since revealed that City did not offer him a contract extension, making it a simple call for him to go to the starting door.
The Belgian midfielder scored the winning goal in the 1-0 victory of the city on Wolves on Friday evening when Pep Guardiola's side strengthened their grip on a Champions League place, and Carragher was impressed by his performance. However, the ex-liverpool man believes that City De Bruyne should let it go because he could not justify his wages after his fitness issues in the past seasons.
“He is one of the best paid players in world football, (but) he has been a lot injured in the last two years, so it is difficult to justify for Manchester City from a business point of view to give him a new contract,” Carragher explained to Sky Sports.
'In a club like this you couldn't afford to have someone on that kind of wages who don't play every week. That should be for one of your star players.
'He is still a star player, but he is not going to play every week, he will probably play 20-25 games per season. Man City as a company could not justify that. '
Carragher's colleague expert Micah Richards suggested that De Bruyne is still 'good enough' to play for City or another top club.
De Bruyne is strongly connected to a move to the US or Saudi Aarabia when he leaves the city, but has indicated that he still feels that he has a lot to offer at the highest level.
And now Carragher expects De Bruyne to stay in Europe instead of going to the middle or stands for a lucrative contract.
“I think what is interesting from his comments is that he doesn't think he's ready at the highest level,” said Carragher.
'It will not be Manchester City, but in my head I thought he was going to MLS or Saudi. It doesn't sound like that is going to happen.
“He still thinks he can play next year, the season after the highest level of European football.”
