Carragher gives verdict on Nunez’s long-term prospects at club under Arne Slot

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on Darwin Nunez's long-term prospects at the club under Arne Slot.

Nunez was given a start against Newcastle at St James' Park on Wednesday evening, his sixth start in thirteen Premier League games.

However, the Uruguayan striker has only scored three goals in seventeen games this season.

Former Man United defender Gary Neville asked the question about Nunez's performances on the Stick to Football watchalong, brought to you by Sky Bet.

Neville highlighted that Nunez had signed for the Reds in the summer of 2022 in a club-record fee of £85m.

“I never know what will happen to Nunez if he continues,” said former Arsenal striker Ian Wright.

'We said we don't know what he's going to do, so how will the defenders do that? No one ever says that better than a good player,” Carragher added.

'It cost £63 million with add-ons and there is no way he got the add-ons.'

Wright replied: “I don't care if it's still 85, I would have thought for that price we would have seen a lot more of him by now. It won't be any different than what he is now.

“I'm not sure he will be here next season, I think Liverpool will move him,” Carragher added.

Neville questioned Carragher about Liverpool fans' continued support for Nunez despite his inconsistency.

The former Liverpool defender suggested Nunez was seen as a 'cult hero' by Reds supporters, noting the 25-year-old's hard work for the team.

This led Neville to question whether Nunez is better than another Liverpool cult hero, Divock Origi.

The Belgian striker scored 41 goals in 175 appearances for the club, but rose to fame for crucial goals for the club.

Origi memorably scored in Liverpool's famous Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona.

The Belgian then scored the decisive goal in the final victory over Tottenham in 2019, before eventually leaving the club for AC Milan.

'He's better than [Divock] Origi,” Carragher replied.

“I'd like Origi to score more than him,” Wright replied, and Neville added: “I would too.”

Nunez came close to giving Liverpool the lead against Newcastle after Curtis Jones canceled out Alexander Isak's opener.

The forward agonizingly failed to connect Cody Gakpo's header across goal with the empty net gaping.

“How did he miss that?” Wright added, while Neville joked: '£95million he is'.

“That's the competition right there,” Carragher joked, before adding: “I can't believe that. Gakpo is actually trying to set it up.”
