Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool's 6-3 win against Tottenham was a “performance of champions” but also a statement for all the other Premier League title contenders.
Following Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Everton earlier on Sunday afternoon, Liverpool opened a four-point lead over Enzo Maresca's side and will now sit in first place heading into Christmas.
Carragher has since labeled the win as a “statement” for other clubs in the title race after the dominant performance away from home.
“It felt like a really big game,” Carragher said on Super Sunday.
“Liverpool were excellent and when you look at Chelsea or Arsenal you think: 'This team is going to have to stop for a while'.
“It felt like a statement victory – a performance by the chosen champions. They were so dominant.”
Carra: Slot was desperate for Tottenham to play that way
The former Liverpool defender spoke further about Arne Slot's pre-match comments about Tottenham and their playing style, praising the “great” job Ange Postecoglou was doing and dismissing claims that his style was “too attacking”.
“People thought he was defending Postecoglou, I don't believe that,” Carragher continued.
“He wanted Tottenham to play the same way. That was clear. Liverpool could have scored ten!”
“From minute one to 36 it was complete dominance. It could have been anything today.
“The score flatters Tottenham, it could have been much worse. Tottenham are absolutely battered.”
Alexander-Arnold warned of Madrid's move
It was Trent Alexander-Arnold's sharp pass to Luis Diaz that set up the defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Carragher concluded by talking about the England international's future, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Alexander-Arnold has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, but Carragher has advised against the move, claiming it could tarnish his legacy as a homegrown talent.
He said: “It's more than a football decision. It's about his legacy at Liverpool and how he is perceived. Do you want to be seen as [Steven] Gerard or [Steve] McManaman?
“He went to Real Madrid and won trophies, but he is not adored.
“As a local player, Trent has been there for 20 years. I don't think it would be nice to feel like you can leave freely. I guarantee the Liverpool supporters will have that feeling.”
“Things are expected of you as a local player. I think it is difficult to leave Liverpool as a local player.
“I wanted to leave the right way, so that they remembered me the right way.
“If he stays he will be remembered as one of the best to play for the club and not far behind Gerrard.”
