Carragher: Postecoglou WILL be sacked if he doesn’t ‘bow to certain things’

Jamie Carragher has insisted that Ange Postecoglou will be sacked if he fails to change Tottenham's playing style after their poor start to the season.

Spurs' punishing 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, in which they collapsed despite taking a two-goal lead in the opening 11 minutes, left them 11th in the Premier League and seven points off the Champions League places .

Mail Sport understands that Postecoglou maintains the immediate backing of chairman Daniel Levy, but it is acknowledged that recent results, apart from the 4-0 win over Manchester City, have been disappointing.

The head coach's reign is expected to come under increased internal scrutiny if he fails to halt the slump. Carragher believes Postecoglou must be more flexible with his tactical approach if he is to remain in charge.

“I've loved Ange Postecoglou ever since he came to the Premier League, in terms of the football they play,” Carragher said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

'It's exciting. They are the most entertaining team I have seen in the last 18 months.

'I know a lot of supporters wanted their Tottenham back and in a way he has given them their Tottenham back. They are exciting to watch. They're almost everyone's second team. But you never think they'll go on and win anything.

'Is that a bit unfair of me to say, because do Tottenham ever win anything? That's the point. Is this a team set up to win big things? I said yesterday: if certain things don't change, he'll be out of a job. I don't want him to be.

'I enjoy watching them play, much more than previous managers. It has to be better than that for Spurs. No one expects Spurs to win the title, but if he doesn't bow to some of the things we're talking about, then ultimately… That's what happens.

'You go to Man City and you win a game 4-0. But then you get battered by another team. You never get the consistency you need to be a Champions League club.

'That's what Tottenham want.'

A second defeat in four days after Thursday's limp 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth left Spurs on a bitter run of just one win in their last seven games.

However, Carragher has claimed that the blame for the slump does not lie solely with the manager, with the pundit even calling for Levy to step aside.

“It's probably time for someone else to come in because because they haven't won a trophy in that period with the managers they've had, they've never really tried their best in the transfer market,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

'They have spent quite a bit of money without blowing other teams out of the water, their wage bill is always one of the smallest and you will never get the best players.

'So it may be time for Daniel Levy – who I am a supporter of because you look at the actual work he has done – but now that the stadium and training ground work has been done, someone else has to step in . leadership of this football club.'
