Dele Alli has signed an 18-month contract with Serie A club Como after spending time training with the side under head coach Cesc Fabregas.
The former Tottenham star has been without a club since the summer but continued to train with Everton until December, when he left Finch Farm. Como offered Dele an invitation to train with them and it appears he has done enough to convince the squad to offer him a contract.
The 28-year-old, who last played a competitive match in February 2023, has signed a contract until 2026, with an option to extend his stay in northern Italy for a further 12 months. However, Dele is not expected to make an immediate impact despite formalizing his position at Como.
The midfielder, who has had a torrid time in recent years due to injuries and off-field problems, will be gradually integrated into the squad. The club plans to provide the MK Dons youth product with a 'supportive environment' in a bid to find his best form.
Their expectations for Dele will come from off the pitch as well as off it. Como's statement revealed that they intend for the former Spurs ace to contribute with performances, but also as a mentor to their young stars: Nico Paz, Alieu Fadera, Assane Diao, Maxence Caqueret, Máxi Perrone and Lucas Da Cunha.
Head Coach Fàbregas said: “The club believes in Dele's potential and wants to help him rediscover his best form. His experience and leadership qualities will undoubtedly benefit the squad.”
Dele spent seven years at Tottenham before moving to Everton. After a difficult period of two years, he was loaned to Besiktas.
The England international was nevertheless grateful for the support he received from Everton during his time at Goodison Park. Revealing his next steps, Dele expressed his gratitude to the Toffees last month.
He wrote on Instagram: “As widely publicized this week, 2025 could set me on a new path with some exciting opportunities.
“Before all this happens, it is very important for me to make it clear how grateful I am to all the fans, staff and players of Everton FC for the support they have given me. It has been an incredibly tough journey getting the final pieces in put together.” to get back to match fitness and I can't thank the Everton staff enough for the hard work they have put into this process.
“Unfortunately, things have not turned out as we all hoped and I think this is the right time for me to turn a new leaf. I would like to wish everyone at this great club the best of luck and hopefully we will see each other again soon.”
