The Champions League match between Feyenoord and Bayern Munich was suspended almost immediately after kick-off due to heavy smoke caused by fans' flares.
The competition, held in De Kuip, started at 8 p.m. However, the referee had to stop events after the first minute because the players on the field could not see anything.
There was a seven-minute delay before the match restarted after fans set off fireworks and smoke bombs as the players took to the pitch.
While Bayern entered Rotterdam as big favorites to win, it was Feyenoord that went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Santiago Gimenez broke the deadlock in the 21st minute before adding to his and Feyenoord's score with a penalty towards the end of first-half stoppage time.
Gimenez gave the Eredivisie outfit the lead after Kim Min-jae's knock failed to clear a long ball over the top. Manuel Neuer could not get there before the Feyenoord star, who went home with confidence.
And shortly afterwards he made no mistake as Raphael Guerreiro gave away a penalty and smashed his effort past Neuer in the away goal.
A win would lift Feyenoord above Bayern Munich in the revamped Champions League standings, with both teams currently on course to compete in the play-offs. Only the eight best teams automatically advance to the round of 16.
