Championship boss quits managerial role again – after calling fans ‘THICKOS’

Millwall have confirmed boss Neil Harris will leave the club, just days after calling a section of their fans 'thickos'.

The club confirmed Harris' departure but in a bizarre twist confirmed he will oversee their next two matches.

Harris will remain in charge of their Championship match at home to Sheffield United on Wednesday before playing his final game as boss away at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

“At the start of 2024 we found ourselves in a difficult situation,” said James Berylson, chairman of Millwall.

Neil came in and, together with his technical staff, encouraged the team.

'Through action and leadership he guided Millwall to great form, securing our return to Championship football this season.

'I would like to thank Neil for all his efforts since returning to the Club and we will be forever grateful for that.

'Following discussions with Neil in recent days he felt it was the right time to resign as a result of the Middlesbrough game and I have accepted his decision.'

Harris appeared to take aim at a section of the Millwall fanbase after their 1-0 defeat to Coventry this weekend.

The club legend had highlighted the absence of key players Romain Esse, Japhet Tanganga and Jake Cooper as major factors.

“We looked like a team that tried really hard and just missed the moments,” Harris said after the game.

'I think people then have to get their heads out of the clouds and realize that we have done well to achieve what we have achieved so far and how tough it is for us as a group.

'Only at the end do we put the ball in the penalty area and one of the young centre-forwards and young wingers is outside the penalty area. It just shows that we still have a lot to learn.

'Those are just levels, aren't they? Those are levels and that's why you trust players to have those moments and we lacked that level today.

'You miss Romain [Esse]you miss Japheth [Tanganga] and you miss Jake Cooper. Three players who will likely end up on someone's championship team.

“So just a reminder to the people, the fat people, that if you take the three best players out of the team, this is Millwall Football Club.”

Harris had returned to Millwall for a second spell as manager and led the club away from the Championship relegation zone.

Millwall currently sit 11th in the Championship, just six points off the play-off places.

Millwall won 15, drew nine and lost nine of Harris' 33 games during his second spell as manager.

He previously managed the club between 2015 and 2019, before resigning in October that year.

Harris took charge at Cardiff a month later and has since had spells at Gillingham and Cambridge United.
