Chelsea won a 2-0 win against Erik ten Hag's Bayer Leverkusen in their first previous season-friendly. Here we investigate some of the big points of their performance …
Joao Pedro wins the first round in a striker fight with Delap
The bid of Liam Delap to be Chelsea's first choice was started well before their friendly against Bayer Leverkusen started, but it ended with him on the rear.
Sky Sports News reported prior to the kick-off that the absence of Nicolas Jackson in the MatchDay team was due to the striker told the club that he wanted to explore his transfer options this summer.
Delap would have been stimulated by getting his first start at Stamford Bridge, although he had only one touch after 15 minutes.
With his second, he sent a shot directly to goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who then saved his best, spread to deny Delap's Picked attempt.
Delap's movement in the back to lock Tyrique George's Curling Cross, was flawless, but he had to score. Two shots, both on goal, missed both big opportunities.
Joao Pedro showed him how to do it. He composed himself in the area before he clinically sent an attempt to the left corner to give himself the advantage. The Strijtrestations on Sunday. David Richardson
Dynamite debut from Estevao
Debuts are not getting much better than Estevao Willian's at Stamford Bridge.
Anticipation and excitement for the 18-year-old talent from Palmeiras was already high on the way to this fixture, but he exceeded all the expectations in his first performance in a Chelsea shirt.
From the minute, Estevao has been blinded with his assets on the ball and trust while driving to defenders.
A natural chemistry with Star-Man Cole Palmer was clearly seen in the kick-off and it eventually paid dividends when the international Brazil wiped the opener home after the shot of Palmer bounced back in the bar.
Cutting a road to this Chelsea Start-Line-Up is not an easy task, but this version will have firmly claimed the young winger for a starting role against Crystal Palace in the Blues' Premier League Opener Opener next Sunday, Live on Sky Sports.Patrick Rowe
Gittens contributes to Maresca's selection headache
Another debutant for Chelsea and another strong performance to be loved by the home crowd at Stamford Bridge.
Jamie Gittens, a signing of £ 51.5 million from Borussia Dortmund this summer, replaced George on the left wing in the 64th minute and did not waste time to show his entire range of talents.
The 21-year-old showed a clear intention with the ball, drove regularly in dangerous areas and looked to facilitate his teammates.
“It means that I want to push harder in the training,” said Gittens Channel 5 after the game when he was asked about the competition for places in the club.
“Everyone is so competitive, and I need that to push myself to the maximum.”
With links to Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho intensively behind the scenes, protecting a regular role in this line-up can become even more difficult.
However, if Gittens plays as he did during his short cameo against Leverkusen, it will be difficult for Maresca to look past the winger. Patrick Rowe
Tosin has the edge to replace Colwill
The ACL injury of Levi Colwill came as an important blow to Chelsea this week on their return to training. It has given Maresca a problem to solve.
Colwill enjoyed a good season in the left Center-back last campaign, which brought calmness to the backline and Definitated Chelsea's possessed style. He had built up a promising partnership with Trevoh Chalobah, who forced himself his way to the side after returning a loan spell in Crystal Palace.
Chalobah is expected to start, but who will work him together? Josh Acheampong received the start -audition against Leverkusen. The 19-year-old Academy graduated played in the middle of the middle, with Chalobah moved to the other side.
ACEAMPONG completed all 76 of his attempted attempt, although only one of them was a long pass. Tosin replaced Chalobah during the break and did not make a pass and hit four long balls.
Tosin's meaningful contribution came when he remained the best chance of Leverkusen after Acheampong had fallen over the ball deep in half.
Tosin, 27, has considerably more experience than Acheampong, with loan spells in West Brom and Blackburn in the championship before playing 119 times for Fulham and 44 performances for Chelsea last season. It is his place to lose. David Richardson
