Next week Liam Delap will miss the semi -final of Chelsea's Club World Cup against Fluminense after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament on Friday evening.
The 22-year-old striker, who joined the blues with the $ 41 million (£ 30 million) of Ipswich this summer, was booked before the side of Enzo Maresca claimed a 2-1 victory over Palmeiras in the quarterfinals.
That victory means that they will continue to the last four of the competition, with another Brazilian team to arrive in New York City on Tuesday in Fluminense.
Nevertheless, Delap will not play a role in that semi -final after being warned of an error on Palmeiras' Richard Rios, who earned him a suspension of the Clubworld cup.
Despite the victory of the team at night, Chelsea fans were strongly critical of their new signing to get a 'stupid and unnecessary' booking that he has eradicated with Tuesday's game.
“Another stupid and unnecessary yellow card picked up by Delap,” wrote a supporter on X. “Now he is suspended for the SF if we qualify.”
Another claimed: 'Delap is an idiot. Almost a 2nd yellow for different opinions during HT. '
'Delap has to rise wisely and relax, so many unnecessary mistakes and now suspended. Must get that out of his game, “a third said.
While someone said: “so stupid from Delap … he asked the entire half for that.”
In addition to Delap, Levi Colwill also received his second yellow card from the tournament on Friday evening, which means that he will also miss the semi -final against Fluminense.
Chelsea was made to work for their victory over Palmeiras in Philadelphia, with its own goal from defender Agustin Giay in the 83rd minute who handed them the victory.
Cole Palmer had given the Premier League club the lead with a cool finish early in the first half, only for the incoming Chelsea star Estevao to level his future teammates eight minutes after the interval.
Although, just like extra time seemed to be, Malo Gusto saw a shot from the box of Giay and flying in the back of the net with seven minutes, which proved the winning goal of the game.
Apart from his yellow card, Delap has passed a difficult night for Chelsea in advance, because he is still waiting for his first goal for the club.
If his teammates did not pass Fluminense on Tuesday, his next chance will come when the Blues Face Bayer Leverkusen in a preseason -friendly on August 8.
