In 2020, the Spanish Super Cup was controversially moved to Saudi Arabia, where it has been held ever since. The agreement to make this happen is currently under investigation, and former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is among those being looked at.
According to Relevo, the Civil Guard's Central Operational Unit (UCO) has concluded that Pique was an “active part” of the contract that brought the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia. As such, they have asked the president of the current case to release a letter of rogatory to Saudi Arabia to identify the former Barcelona player's bank accounts – as well as those of Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation.
This issue has sparked many discussions in Spanish football. It will be interesting to see how the case develops as the investigation continues.
