Palmeiras and FC Porto played a 0-0 draw in their opening game of group A in the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC), in what their very first competitive meeting was.
Both teams missed early opportunities to score, while Joao Mario stepped behind and shot to the goal, but Weverton was right. Moments later, the high press of Palmeiras Porto problems caused the ball to fall to Estêvão on the edge of the box, but the teenager just widely curled.
Weverson then made two more saves, so that his teammate Felipe Anderson first led a header in his own net before he makes the efforts of Samu Aghowa on a tight perspective.
There was drama along the other end in the stopping time when Claudio Ramos produced a stunning double salvation to deny Richard Rios and Mauricio up close, before the second shot of the former Van de Lijn was erased.
In the light of the chances for both parties, it was a surprise to see this scoreless during the break – especially after Porto had not seen any of their previous 11 competitive games produce a 0-0 rest time.
The start of the second half was also lively, when Fabio Vieira drove forward before curling to the bottom corner, but Weverton did well to tip the ball along the post.
She then had Pedro a free head from a corner and should have done better if the ball flew over. Both teams made changes to try to find a winner, and Allan came in the neighborhood when he cut in before he hit the bottom corner, with Ramos going down well to stop.
Palmeiras was the team that pushed the most in the final phase, because Ramos produced a brilliant reaction, except to stop the powerful header of Murilo Cerqueira from a corner.
However, the Brazilians had to settle for a point, with manager Abel Ferreira's Winless Head-to-Head Record against Porto that extends to seven games.
The own three-match winning run from the Portuguese side came to an end. But given how the game ended, they might be contempt with a point itself.
