Colby Covington recorded the only knockdown of his 11-year UFC career with a spinning backfist out of nowhere

On this day in 2016, Colby Covington recovered from the first defeat of his career in a fight that let him land his only UFC Knockdown.

When Covington broke into the upper echelon of the 170-pound division of the UFC, many newer fans were surprised to see an unlikely defeat on his record.

In 2015, Covington was submitted by Warlley Alves in less than 90 seconds. The Brazilian then lost eight of his next 12 fights in the UFC before he was released last February.

'Chaos' had to make a statement after that setback, and he did this against an opponent who remains the only hunter who is falling in the UFC by the wrestling specialist.

Colby Covington surprised Jonathan Meunier with a rotating backfist before he submitted him to UFC Ottawa

'Chaos' is hardly known for its striking bravery, and versions such as Covington's Grijp-High victory against Jorge Masvidal have contributed to a negative reputation about the style he used to win a lot of his fighting.

But that could not have been further from the case in UFC Ottawa on 18 June 2016, when 'Chaos' shared the Octagon with Canada's own Jonathan Meunier.

The then Future Interim-Welterweight champion attracted a showstopper seconds in round three to set up a finish and to hit Meunier with a devastating rotating backfist.

After what remains, his only knock-down in 11 years in the UFC, Covington returned to his bread and butter, so he took Meunier back before he frantically ticked him on a tight choke.

Colby Covington has only won two of his last five UFC fights

That result marked the second entry from Covington in four UFC victories. It may be surprising that he did not succeed in finding a tap in the 12 fights he has had since then.

And more than just finishing fights, 'chaos' had a hard time winning them since he introduced the title photo on 170 pounds.

The American has lost all three of his shots at the undisputed belt and drops two fights against Kamaru Usman for a matte show against Leon Edwards.

Covington recently passed a brutal night against Joaquin Buckley, who struck the ex-interim champion in Tampa last December until the doctor had seen enough.

It is still too viewed with whom Covington will be confronted, because the 37-year-old wants to prove that his time at the top of the division is not over yet.
