Courtois withdraws from Belgian squad with injury, in doubt for Club World Cup

The goalkeeper of Belgium Thibaut Courtois has withdrawn from the team for their opening up cup this month due to a back injury.

The player's club Real Madrid said on Sunday that the diagnosis of sacroiliitis had been made – inflammation of one or both Sacro -iliac joints in the area where the lower back and the pelvis come together.

“The medical staff of Real Madrid and the Royal Belgian Football Association have discussed the back problems of Thibaut Courtois intensively in the past period,” the Belgian association added in a statement.

“Both medical staff have come to the conclusion that the goalkeeper is not suitable for the coming internationals.”

The injury can also endanger the chances of Courtois to play in the club World Cup in the United States, where Real Madrid opens their campaign in Miami against Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia on 18 June.

Not -Nordin Jackers from Club Brugge will replace Courtois in the Belgian team for the matches against North Macedonia in Skopje on Friday and at home next Monday.

The goalkeeper of Nottingham Forest Matz Sels is expected to take the place of Courtois in goal for the two group J matches.
