Cunha all but confirms Wolves exit – ‘I’ve made it clear’

Matheus Cunha says he would like to go from Wolves in the summer, and a new appointment in Arsenal can just give the Gunners the upper hand in the fight to sign him

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha says he will follow a step of the club this summer – and Arsenal may have just jumped on the head of the queue to sign him.

The Brazil International Forward only signed a new deal of four and a half years at Molineux at the beginning of February, but it was generally accepted that this was only to protect its value for the club, with a release clause of approximately £ 62.5 million inserted into the contract.

Several top clubs had signed in the transfer window of January, but the 25-year-old chose to stay in the club and to help with the fight against relegation, with wolves that were now in 17th place and nine points free from Ipswich in the 18th.

Cunha, who scored his first goal for Brazil in their 4-1 defeat against Argentina during the recent international break, has had to deal with two remarkable disciplinary issues this season.

He received a ban of two games and a fine of £ 80,000 on New Year's Eve after collision with a staff member of Ipswich in December, and he is currently in the middle of a ban on violent behavior for his actions after he was sent against Bournemouth earlier this month in the FA Cup, after which he received a fine of £ 50,000.

Cunha says to the Guardian and says that he would now like Wolves to help them get rid of the relegation the eve when he is not suspended.

“I had many offers (to leave in January), but I would not feel good if I had done it,” said Cunha. “Some things you can't control, but I couldn't leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now we are almost achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I made it clear that I have to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for great things. I have potential. “

As mentioned in the Guardian report, one of those offers from Arsenal came, and the Gunners could be ready this summer to return to Cunha after the appointment of Andrea Berta as sports director was confirmed on Sunday.

It was Berta who brought Cunha to Atletico Madrid from Hertha Berlin in 2021, where the La Liga Giants paid around £ 22 million for his services.

Cunha was one of a number of remarkable signing sessions from Berta during his time in the club, in which the Italian brought people like Rodri, Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak, Julian Alvarez and Luis Suarez.

“I am very happy to become a member of Arsenal in what is a very exciting period for the club,” Berta said at the Gunners.

“I have looked at with great interest how Arsenal has evolved in recent years and I have admired the hard work that has gone to restore the club as an important force in European football with a passionate supporters around the world.

“The club has great values and a rich history, and I am looking forward to playing my role in shaping a successful future with a great team. I can't wait to get started in my new role and I am really looking forward to experiencing my first game in Emirates Stadium together with our supporters.”
