Arsenal and Manchester United's hopes of signing Matheus Cunha have been dashed after the Brazilian reportedly agreed a contract extension with Wolves.
Cunha has been in excellent form for Wolves this season, scoring ten goals in nineteen games so far. Only six players have been more prolific goalscorers in the Premier League this season and Cunha has attracted interest from a number of clubs.
Arsenal and United have both been linked with the striker, but it appears Cunha has decided to stay with Wolves as they continue their battle against relegation. Multiple reports claim that the 25-year-old has agreed to sign a new long-term deal with Wolves.
The news will be a big boost for Wolves and new boss Vitor Pereira, who replaced Gary O'Neil as head coach last month. Pereira has made an unbeaten start at Molineux, picking up two wins and one draw in his first three games in charge to move Wolves one point above the bottom three.
And Pereira has made it clear that the club “needs” Cunha if they are to avoid relegation to the Championship. “He is a special player,” Pereira told Amazon Prime after Wolves defeated Manchester United on Boxing Day.
“He can do things that can make a difference in small details. Matheus Cunha, in my opinion, is a player who can achieve high standards in this competition.” When asked if Cunha might leave the club, Pereira added: “I hope not, I hope not, because we need him.
“He came here with a lot of energy. He told us that it has been his dream for 18 years to come here and manage a team in the Premier League. You can see the impact, you can see the energy, how he can teach us. I think he can help everyone show what we can do.”
Wolves will be without Cunha when they host Nottingham Forest on Monday after he was handed a two-match ban and fined £80,000 following a scuffle in which he appeared to punch an Ipswich staffer last month.
In a statement, the FA said: “Matheus Cunha has been suspended for two matches and fined £80,000 following the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday 14 December 2024.
“The attacker was accused of misconduct and it was alleged that he had acted in an inappropriate manner after the final whistle. He admitted the charge and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission. The full written reasons for this case will be available at be published in due course.” course.”
