Cuthbert shrugs off Chelsea quadruple talk despite Women’s League Cup win

Erin Cuthbert would not be attracted to speculation that Chelsea could win a quadruple this season, and noted that they are still doing work after winning the Women's League Cup.

Chelsea had lost each of the previous Three Ladies League Cup finals, but put an end to that run on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Pride Park Stadium.

Mayra Ramirez opened the score early in the first half, although City would restore parity in the 64th minute through the astonishing effort of Aoba Fujino.

However, the game was decided by Yui Hasegawa in the 77th minute by Yui Hasegawa, while handing the cross of Ramirez about Ayaki Yamashita in her own net.

Sonia Bompastor has won a trophy with Chelsea at her first attempt, with many who expect them to win all four pieces of silverware this season.

Cuthbert, however, played those ideas and said that Chelsea still has a lot of work to do if they want to make it happen.

“I hate all that chat to be honest,” Cuthbert told BBC One. 'I heard Lucy [Bronze] Say a comment this week, we won nothing.

“We have been undefeated so far, but it honestly means nothing. Which trophy should you show for that? Other than this Subway Cup, that is one in four.

“We just have to try to take a foot for the other. Champions League following and see how far we can get.

“It gets harder every time. Everyone thinks it's easy, but it's just becoming more difficult and harder and we get hungry and hungry.”

This was the first of the four consecutive meetings between Chelsea and City in all competitions, whereby the two teams also encountered in a two-legged Women's Champions League quart final on either side of their Women's Super League meeting.

Chelsea has now won 12 of their last 18 meetings with City in all competitions (D3 L3), including their last two, which they also defeated in the WSL this season.

They also have an intimidating 28-match undefeated streak since the arrival of Bompastor, and she believes that winning the first of these four meetings with City can be a necessary boost for the next three.

“Psychologically it is really important to win the first,” she said.

“Of course it will not be the most important element that the next game starts, but in terms of trust it is really positive. You always recover better if your games win.

“That is a big advantage, but it will not be enough to think so because we have won [the final]It is enough to win the game on Wednesday.

“It is really important in this really rare situation – when you have to come across the same team four times in 12 days – to take the game per game.”

In the meantime, it was not the return that Nick Cushing wanted the city of Dugout, after he had returned to the club earlier this week to replace Gareth Taylor on an interim basis.

He took the lead for his first city game since February 2020 and was largely successful in the Women's League Cup during his first enchantment, with his first trophy in the 2016 competition.

The citizens are hindered by injuries and can get another blow in the coming days, because Cushing confirmed after the game that Khadija Shaw had felt her hamstring, but he remains positive in his conviction that the team will show more in the coming games.

“That is my job to be a motivation instead of deflating losses, or the fear that we will play a better team,” he said.

“I am a simple guy. This feeling that you get if you lose the final – if that is not enough motivation, we play the wrong game.

“If watching that game does not give you the conviction that you can continue and win … We have done enough to win the game, and we had many moments.

“I was proud of that. If you bear that disappointment, it won't help on Wednesday. We can't help it now.”
