23:30 CET – Good evening and welcome to our live reporting from the FIFA Club World Cup while the renewed tournament starts at night, with Inter Miami against Al Ahly at 02:00 CET.
It promises to be a fascinating opener in Miami, because both parties want to put down an early marker in what an exciting inaugural group stage should be at a dozen American locations.
Javier Mascherano – who won the Club World Cup twice as a Barcelona player in 2012 and 2016 – leads Inter Miami in their first performance in the tournament after winning the supporters' Shield of 2024 MLS.
They will be looking for Talisman Lionel Messi for inspiration, with the legendary Argentinian who scored five goals in as many Club World Cup matches during his career – including three goals in the final.
With regard to the Egyptian giants Al Ahly, they make their 11th performance in the competition, they have qualified for this latest edition via three CAF Champions League triumphs since 2020/21.
Although the side of Jose Riveiro may not have the same star power, because many of the heavy hitters in the tournament, a six-game run of domestic victories suggests that they should be able to mix it with the elite.
