On this day in 2014, a huge UFC PPV suffered a shocking change in the main map.
On July 5, UFC 175 took place in the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas with two title fights at the top of the bill.
In the main event, Chris Weidman Lyoto Machida defeated the middleweight belt in a great five-round collision when 'the All-American' held.
The last fight of the night perhaps the distance of 25 minutes went, but the same could not be said for the Co-Main event where Ronda Rousey needed only 16 seconds to beat Alexis Davis in a bantamweight title match.
Several large matchups that were planned for the event, including Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei Silva, fell apart, but that was not where the fighter cancellations ended.
Stefan Struve was withdrawn from his UFC 175 fight on the main map shortly before he walked away
Stefan Struve would come across Matt Mitrione in a heavyweight match on the main map of UFC 175 before the PPV finally took place with only four fights.
Struve had not fought since March 2013 because he suffered from a leaking aortic valve and an enlarged heart, although his condition improved for the rest of the year.
'Skyscraper' was made available to compete in 2014, but his earlier health problems eventually led to some difficulties while he was backstage at UFC 175.
During the event, Dana White announced that Struve was out of battle because of an increased heartbeat that led to the promotion that the matchup with Matt Mitrione canceled.
Fight -fans discovered the news as soon as the PPV head card had already started, where White later told that MMA is fighting that the towering heavyweight was darkened and that the UFC would not take any risks.
Dr. Jeffery Davidson gave an update about Struve's status during the broadcast and confirmed that it didn't look like it would be a little too serious, but he still had to be taken out of the fight.
“Stefan had an almost feature spell. He is doing great now, that is the most important thing. He is safe and he is now healthy. We are keeping him for precautions. But in the field of consultation with the group and the doctors in the staff, I think we will clearly tell him, clearly, no fighting today.
“The state of Stefan is very stable. We will have to look at him in the future. He can fight another day if he would like it. He will do well medically. We are going to take precautions tonight.”
Stefan Struve placed his medical problems behind him by fighting 11 more times in the UFC
After his attempt to return to UFC 175, Stefan Struve would take a step back in the Octagon later that year when he stood opposite Alistair Overeem in December.
'Skyscraper' would remain a prominent figure in the heavyweight division of the UFC and even had the opportunity to headline a fighting evening event in his home country of the Netherlands in 2017.
In February 2021, Struve announced his retirement from MMA, although he remained as a commentator and presenter in the sport that is regularly present for the largest UFC events.
He ended his professional career with a record of 29-13 and is connected to Derrick Lewis for the second most post-fight bonuses in UFC Heavyweight History.
