Dana White waxes lyrical over ‘all-time great’ Dustin Poirier ahead of UFC 318 retirement fight… ‘This is for him’

Dustin Poirier is now slightly less than a month away from his last fight in the UFC after an incredible career in the promotion.

On July 19, the former UFC interim light weight champion Dustin Poirier will take its last walk to the UFC Octagon when he takes on Max Holloway for the UFC BMF title on UFC 318.

The last time 'The Diamond' participated in the cage was last June when he took on Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title on UFC 302, and after a crushing loss he decided that his title ambitions had finally come to an end.

Poirier and Holloway have two earlier occasions bumped with their first meeting in 2012 when Poirier almost broke the 19-year-old arm of Max Holloway.

Dana White claims that UFC 318 was made pure for Dustin Poirier

The last time Poirier participated in his hometown was back in 2015 when he ran through another Hawaiiaan in Yancy Mediros.

Although this is 'The Diamond's' last fight in sport, Holloway has other ideas because he hopes that a victory on Poirier will put him in line for the next lightweight title fight against Ilia Topuria or Charles Oliveira.

Although the goal of Dana White is for the UFC to hold an event in every possible location, he knew that as soon as Poirier had decided that his next fight would be his last, he had to bring the promotion back to Louisiana.

“Listen, I would like to take the UFC to places that are a destination where people like to go, great hotels, many other things to do, restaurants, shopping and New Orleans is one of the absolute best, so it's good to be back,” White told WDSU News.

“Dustin Poirier is a big star for us all over the world, he has achieved a lot in sport and this is for him to be honest with you, this is for him. He wanted to have his last fight and end his career in New Orleans, so here we are.

“He has now arranged number five in the world in the lightweight division and he is a man who has held his position in the top 10 in the sport for a long time, he has achieved a lot, he is one of the great ones of all time,” White continued.

Dustin Poirier talks about great life change prior to emotional UFC pension

Prior to what an extremely emotional broadcast will be for one of the most entertaining hunters of all time, the 36-year-old has a huge change in life detailed in detail before UFC 318.

“Yes (this is my pension fight), this is the last. 19 years, man. Had my first cage fight in 2007, my wife is now pregnant. I have a daughter and now my wife is pregnant with a boy, so there is a lot going on and I have been fighting for a long time,” Poirier said during a conversation in his gym.

Win or loss on July 19, Poirier is probably ready to get one of the loudest pops ever in the UFC, who fights one last time for his fans.
