If the UFC knew how it would end, Daniel Cormier apparently does not believe that Jones would have had his wish last year to fight Stipe Miocic.
Dana White announced the pension of Jones quite without mercy in June, with the career of the former light heavyweight champion that is coming to an end under a controversy cloud because of his heavyweight rule.
Jones held the belt for more than two years, defended it only once and avoided a union fight against the then interimal title holder Tom Aspinall. Debate was fueled when it was announced that Jones would fight against Miocic on UFC 309 instead of Aspinall, who had already caught the interim gold after an injury to the champion.
White was firm in defending the move and it stated that the Miocic Matchup was the fight to make for Madison Square Garden, and Cormier thinks that was due to a Jones promise that was not held.
Daniel Cormier believes that Jon Jones agreed to face Tom Aspinall to get the green light for Stipe Miocic 'Legacy Fight'
During a recent performance on MightyCast, organized by UFC legend Demetrious Johnson, Cormier thought about the only title defense of Jones in the heavyweight division.
'DC', who commented eight months ago on Miocic's Body Shot TKO of his bitter rival of Miocic in New York City, admitted that the fight should never have happened given the presence of an interim champion in Aspinal.
In terms of why it took place, Cormier believes that the UFC must have had the guarantees about Jones's plan and then fight Aspinall.
“I really thought that when Jones came back -Tom Aspinall was the interim champion when Jones fought against Stipe. How?! How can you fight someone else if the interim champion is available? It shouldn't have happened,” Cormier said.
“However, I got it. But this is where I feel things are crossed,” Cormier added. “I think they (the UFC) may have (done) with the idea that he would have given them the Tom Aspinall fight.
“That is the only reason why they give you a legacy fight, is if you give me something back. I scratch your back, you scratch mine. I have the feeling that he might be going:” Give me the stipe fight, I want to do it on Madison Square, but then I will do the Aspinal fight. “
“Then the Tom Aspinall fight comes about and he goes:” Give me $ 30 million, “think if,” this will be my way of it (out). ” … you have to fight the man.
The last hope for Tom Aspinall vs. Jon Jones recently emerged
Despite Jones' pension, it remains about a long -awaited collision with Aspinall on the table.
It was not long before the resident of Rochester became conversations about a comeback, where the Catalyst was the planned UFC Witte Huis event of Donald Trump to celebrate July 4 in 2026.
In addition to Conor McGregor and others, Jones immediately raised his hand. And if Aspinall has to remain on the heavyweight throne, some believe that the UKS vs. UK confrontation could finally come to an APT location.
Cormier would even see that fight surprisingly in support of Jones, whom he branded the best option for America to achieve a huge home victory to conclude a celebration of July 4.
