Daniel Levy on Ange Postecoglou sacking: Europa win not enough for Spurs, we want Premier League title

Daniel Levy has broken his silence on the looting of Ange Postecoglou and said that winning the Europa League is not enough – he wants the Premier League title.

The dismissal of Postecoglou – described as a “unanimous decision” by the Spurs Board – came 16 days after he led Spurs to a 1-0 Europa League Final victory over Manchester United to claim their first European trophy in 41 years.

Thomas Frank replaced him and left Brentford after seven years and will manage it in Europe for the first time while Spurs is preparing for Champions League football next season.

Despite Glory in Bilbao, in which Spurs qualified for next season's Champions League, he came after Postecoglou had ever challenged the club's worst Premier League campaign.

Chairman Levy has spoken for the first time since Postecoglou's departure and explained the decision of the board to dismiss him in an interview with Spurs' Internal MediaMeam next to Vinai Venkatesham, which was appointed chief executive of the club in April.

Levy said: “You saw the outpouring of emotion with the parade. It was just incredible. We won a European trophy.

“But it's not enough. It is what we have not done that is more important. We have to win the competition.

“We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win.”

He added: “I am very grateful. I don't regret naming Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in our second season we were in the moon to win the trophy.

“But we have to participate in all competitions and we thought we needed a change. I have an excellent relationship with him. I told him that he will always be part of our history.

'Himself and his family are always welcome back. It was a collective decision. It was not my decision. We do everything together. It was difficult emotional, but we believe that we made the right decision for the club.

“When you have a new coach, it is always a new start. You always have different ideas. But we want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season.

“One of the things that struck me with Thomas is that he is clearly very intelligent. Great communicator. Super man. Plus all other technical aspects that are clearly important.”

Ange: I achieved what many said was not possible

In September, Postecoglou claimed famous that he “always wins things in his second season” – but fulfilling his promise was enough to keep his job.

Postecoglou, through a statement from his Agency CAA Base, said: “If I think about my time as a manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my compelling emotion is one of pride.

“The possibility of leading one of the historic football clubs in England and to bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime.

“Who share that experience with all those who really love this club and the impact it had on them is something that I will never forget.

“That night in Bilbao was the highlight of two years of hard work, dedication and relying faith in a dream.

“There were many challenges to overcome and a lot of noise that is accompanied by trying to achieve what many said was not possible.

“We have also laid foundations that mean that this club does not have to wait 17 years for their next success.

“I have enormous faith in this group of players and I know that there is much more potential and growth in it.

“I really want to thank those who are the lifeline of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to continue.

“It is important to recognize the hard -working people at Spurs who have given me encouragement every day.

“And finally I want to thank those who have been with me every day for the past two years.

“A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who have never doubted that we could do something special.

“We are connected forever, Auder Est -Facere.”
