Data Debrief: Toothless Saints suffer Bees’ sting

Brentford recorded their first away win of the season as they defeated Southampton with a 5-0 victory at St Mary's.

Kevin Schade gave the Bees an early lead with a confident finish after a nice combination with Mikkel Damsgaard.

Brentford's dominance seemed to have counted for a moment when Sepp van den Berg headed in, but it was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.

That didn't deter Thomas Frank's side though and they doubled their lead shortly afterwards with a brilliant finish from Bryan Mbeumo, before scoring a well-taken penalty.

Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa then wrapped things up with goals in stoppage time.

Review of the data: Toothless saints suffer from the sting of the bees

Despite a change of manager, Southampton continue to struggle with three straight defeats to start Juric's tenure and the Saints have now failed to score in 10 of their 20 league matches this season, with no team failing to do so anymore.

Brentford certainly don't have that problem, and they have now scored 38 goals this season. Mbeumo's already seen him score thirteen goals in the Premier League, three of which came in the first two games of 2025. Only Alexander Isak and Mohamed Salah have scored in more games in the competition so far.

Another player who has excelled for Brentford is Damsgaard. The Dane initially struggled to establish himself in England following his move from Sampdoria in 2022. He managed just two assists in his first 55 games, but he now has seven assists in his last 14 appearances for the Bees, trailing only Salah and Bukayo Saka provided more assists. in the Premier League in 2024-2025.
