David de Gea makes incredible triple save for Fiorentina
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has continued his impressive start for Fiorentina with an incredible triple save in the Italian side's win away to Como.
The Spaniard left United after 12 seasons at the club in the summer of 2023 after being frozen out by former manager Erik ten Hag despite winning the Golden Glove in his final season.
He was replaced by Andre Onana and took a year away from football as a free agent before transferring to Fiorentina in the summer.
The 33-year-old has enjoyed something of a career renaissance in Italy, taking the No. 1 spot after a string of top-flight performances.
He inspired Fiorentina to victory again on Sunday evening with a trio of stunning stops, in turn keeping his sixth clean sheet of the campaign as La Viola won 2-0 against Como.
De Gea's heroics left his side just one point behind leaders Napoli and extended their winning streak to seven straight games as Serie A remains Europe's most closely contested division.
With 61 minutes left on the clock and his side leading 1-0 after a Yacine Adli strike in the first half, De Gea showed off his sensational shot to put La Viola ahead.
He went low first and made a brilliant stop from Edoardo Goldaniga, who whipped the end of a beautifully floated cross into the box.
The ball then fell perfectly to defender Federico Barba in acres of space, but the ex-United keeper showed brilliant reactions to thwart it, before managing to clear a third attempt on the line.
Just eight minutes later, former Everton striker Moise Kean found the back of the net to send Fiorentina up to fourth in Serie A.
Italy side boss Raffaele Palladino was stunned by De Gea's remarkable saves, suggesting he still looks as old as he did when he left Atletico Madrid for the Red Devils in 2011.
'We are Beltran who chases opponents and runs like a defender. We are Riccardo Sottil standing up and making a difference. We are De Gea, who makes saves like he is 20,” Palladino told DAZN.
“Having said all that, we haven't achieved anything yet. There is a sense of unity and a great team spirit has developed. I dedicate the victory to the president because tomorrow is his birthday.”
The achievement adds to the excellent collection he has had since joining La Viola on a free transfer.
In October, De Gea scored two penalties in one match, helping his side secure a crucial victory over AC Milan.
He denied both former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and Theo Hernandez from the spot in both halves in a pulsating affair that saw a total of three penalty saves and two red cards.
The pair of stops made him the first goalkeeper to make two penalty saves in a single Serie A match since Federico Marchetti for Lazio in May 2016.
