Former Manchester United goalkeeper David Gaskell has died aged 84, his family have confirmed.
The cause of death has not been specified, but is believed to be due to an ongoing illness.
After starting his youth career with the Red Devils, Gaskell became the club's youngest ever debutant on 24 October 1956 – at just 16 years and 19 days old.
He played in the 1956 FA Charity Shield final against Man City in place of injured goalkeeper Ray Wood, helping United win 1–0 against their rivals.
On Friday evening, Gaskell's family released a heartwarming statement, noting his admirable character on and off the football field.
It read: 'Dave was devoted to his beloved wife Barbara, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. He was a proud father to his three daughters, Michelle, Lesley and Nicola, and a loving grandfather to Joel, Emily, Eleanor, Ted and Edith. His family was his greatest joy, and his legacy will live on through them.
'In these last few weeks of illness, Dave has been surrounded by the love and support of the many friends he has made throughout his life – friends who, like so many in Wrexham and beyond, will miss him dearly.
“Dave Gaskell leaves behind not only a remarkable sporting legacy, but also an enduring example of kindness, dedication and humility. He will be deeply missed, but will also be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
United wrote an obituary on the evening of Gaskell's death, praising his iconic career at the club.
The opening statement read: 'Manchester United are saddened to learn of the passing of our former goalkeeper David Gaskell, a figure with a special place in the club's history.'
In addition, United released an official statement on social media saying: 'We are deeply saddened by the passing of David Gaskell, our youngest ever debutant and former goalkeeper. We extend our condolences to his family and friends.”
Between 1956 and 1968, Gaskell made 96 appearances for United and played under the iconic Sir Matt Busby during his time in Manchester.
Gaskell won four trophies at the club: the First Division in 1964–65 and 1966–67, the FA Cup in 1962–63 and the FA Charity Shield in 1956.
