The Belgian joined the Serie A -side on a free transfer last month after a decade in Manchester City. As a welcome gesture, the club arranged that the midfielder is training to train with shorts with the iconic song from Maradona.
He admitted that he was surprised by the club's decision to let him bear the legendary number of their beloved icon.
De Bruyne said: “I would say that I was a bit surprised in the beginning, because I clearly know that the number was retired. But in a different way it is an honor.
“It is an honor of the team and the club to give me this responsibility. I don't think it adds more pressure. I think the pressure comes from itself – if you play for large teams such as Napoli, the pressure will be there. There is a team that wants to win, so you know what to do as a team, as a team, as a team.
“But I don't believe that a song or something else will add the pressure. Maradona is one of the legends of the game and is synonymous with Napoli. Anyway, we know that, but I am grateful. I am proud. But I am my own player.
“I'm going to try to do the work best I can do, and hopefully I can enjoy the team and the city and the fans, and get some good versions in it.”
