De Paul influence key to Atleti’s title charge, says Simeone

The shape of Rodrigo de Paul is the key to the bid of Atletico Madrid on Laliga Glory, said head coach Diego Simeone on the eve of Saturday with Villarreal.

The Paul, a World Cup and Copa America winner at Argentina, has earned compliments for his contributions to both ends of the field during a spell in which Atletico won 16 of 17 games in all competitions.

“He is an established football player, a world champion,” Simeone told reporters on Friday.

“In this recent good period he plays at his best for Atletico, and it is normal for people to appreciate what he gives.

“He is very important to us, with a lot of personality, and we hope that he will continue in this way. We will demand this because it is what we need.”

Simeone also praised his son, Atletico-forecast Giuliano, who received a standing ovation when he was replaced during a 2-1 Champions League victory on Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.

“I only see him as a football player,” said Simeone. “I appreciate his work. He is exactly what we imagined and he does what we expect from him.

“We will demand improvement from him, he must score goals, but he has the most important qualities: enthusiasm, courage, humility, generosity. He will continue to grow if he stays on this path.”

Atletico is second in Laliga with 44 points from 20 games, and a victory over the fifth Villarreal would see them overhaul Rivals Real Madrid, who later play on Saturday.

Asked if it was better for Atletico to play for their title rivals, Simeone said: “We are still a long way from the end of the competition, we only care about our game and concentrate on what our opponents present us.

“Villarreal has a well -defined game with defensive work and many players to combat the four attackers who are very good. (Alex) Baena, (Yeremy) Pino, Gerard Moreno or who plays in front.

“They played very well against Mallorca and we don't think about anything other than looking for players who can help us.”
