Wojciech Szczesny was finally able to put pen on paper before the end of the month on a contract extension from Barcelona.
The former Poland International has passed a difficult start of life this season as a first choice -goalkeeper for Hansi Flick, but he started delivering his performances, as part of an impressive line of consistency in 2025.
Although he initially opted for Inaki Pena as a player for the seasonal injury of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the situation has now been reversed by Flick in favor of Szczesny.
Flick made the daring call to take care of Szczesny in the first half of the campaign, after the injury of Ter Stegen, and he now looks immobile between the Barcelona posts.
Szczesny signed a deal in the short term at the club, which runs until the end of the current season, but all parties are open to an extension based on its form.
Ter Stegen returns to the first team in the summer, and Szczesny will probably go back as a representative, but he seems happy with that scenario.
Sports director Deco confirmed that the conversations move positively and he fully expects the veteran stopper to extend his link before the campaign closes in May.
“Szczesny is a very experienced keeper. We had the opportunity to bring him in through one of those coincidences that occur in football”, according to quotes from Marca.
“He was a player that we knew had contributed a lot to the team and he did that. The credit goes to the coaches and the players themselves on a daily basis.
“We are very happy with him and the role he plays in our campaign. He will certainly stay with us next season.”
Szczesny Prospective New Contract runs until the end of the 2025/26 season, but the club could insert an extension clause in the agreement for the next campaign.
