Desailly says that Milan's culture is now missing mental strength and leadership.
“I am disappointed, because Milan is a mix of many different problems today,” Desailly told Sky Italia.
“The season started badly, then there was a moment when they thought it turned around, but everyone quickly realized that this team missed the leadership to be competitive. All parties in the Serie A table have a very clear philosophy.
“Take a look at Inter, who has assimilated the 3-5-2 system for years and is now playing by heart. I don't think Milan has less individual talent than Inter, but they miss chemistry.
“The arrival of Sergio Conukicao did not change much, because the Supercoppa wins created expectations that were not satisfied. I really thought he might be the right person to get the best out of the talent within the team, but that was not the case.”
However, Desailly says that individual talent is not the problem.
“I don't think it's an individual problem, because Milan has many good players who unfortunately don't just finish each other.
“You see Rafael Leao, Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic, Santiago Gimenez, Tijjani Reijnders. All have quality, but not a real leader, no one who stands out. This is what Milan needs.”
The former Chelsea defender also focused on blues lender Joao Felix.
“Joao Felix is a player with great talent, but he still didn't find his place,” added Desailly.
“He has been in Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, now Milan, without having any real impact. At the moment of his career, he needs a club with a clear philosophy that can build his project around him, to put him at ease to express his potential that we would still not really suggest Paris Saint-Gair.
“What Joao Felix misses is not technology, but character. He is not a leader. At the moment he is not what Milan needs, because he lacks the mental power to breathe new life into the Rossoneri. And vice versa.”
