The Colombian winger is one of eight players with a contract until June 2027. There are no formal discussions about his extension yet.
Luis Díaz was back training at Liverpool's AXA facility on Friday. The winger. The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes in both Colombian 2026 CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, with both matches ending in defeat for La Tri. The team was defeated 3–2 in the first match against Uruguay, a goal from Manuel Ugarte deep in stoppage time denying Colombia a point. That was followed by a home defeat against Ecuador. Results that leave the team in fourth place in the standings with 19 points and still with a good chance of qualifying.
Lucho's performances were below what was expected of him: no goals and no assists in both matches. He will try to put that right on Sunday against Southampton and next week when Real Madrid visit Anfield.
His first few months of the season were excellent, despite not being an undisputed starter ahead of Arne Slot. He scored nine goals and provided two assists in sixteen official matches (11 in the Premier League, 4 in the Champions League and 1 in the League Cup). He is the team's second top scorer, behind Mohamed Salah (with 10 goals).
The great campaign that Díaz is having, together with the rumors linking him with Barcelona for some time, will encourage Liverpool to negotiate a new contract with the player. His contract expires in June 2027, but in England it is customary to enter into discussions and make the first proposals two years before a deal expires. In Lucho's case, that means starting next summer.
Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, the priorities
First, Liverpool must resolve the situation of three key first-team stars. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be out of contract in seven months. If none of them renew the deal by January 1, they are free to negotiate with any club without Liverpool's consent.
For this reason, the club is doing everything it can to conclude new deals before Christmas. Talks are progressing and the mood is positive that most or all will extend their stay beyond June.
Three others who will end their contract with Liverpool in 2026: Ibrahima Konaté (25 years), Andy Robertson (30 years) and Caoimhin Kelleher (25 years). Perhaps the only one who will ultimately innovate is the French central defender due to his age and importance in defense. The Irish goalkeeper is the same age but is looking for regular playing time and has hinted he may have to move on to find it.
Robertson has been at the club since 2017 and while he has been a great servant, the Reds need to look to the future and have already started the search for his eventual replacement at left-back.
Contractual saga: Lucho, Alisson, Jota…
The Liverpool Echo describes next summer's contract negotiations as a 'saga', for which the club will still have a lot of work to do. There are eight players, including Luis Díaz, whose contract expires in June 2027.
Alisson, Joe Gómez, Endo, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley are entering the final two years of their respective deals and the aim is to retain the vast majority of them.
Alisson's situation will be assessed. The Brazilian has been a mainstay in the team since joining from Roma in 2018. But he has struggled with injury problems and remains out with a hamstring problem.
Galatasaray are reportedly preparing a bid for the 32-year-old Brazilian international. The Reds have prepared for a potential scenario where they could lose Alisson, Caoimhin Kelleher or both, or buy Giorgi Marmadashvili from Valencia. Ideally, they want two top-class goalkeepers in the squad to ensure they can withstand the rigors and demands of playing in multiple competitions.
Liverpool already have three fairly obvious contractual sagas to resolve in the coming weeks and months. But regardless of the outcome, this is just the beginning, as only six of Slot's current players will commit to the club beyond 2027.
The Premier League resumes this weekend with Liverpool top of the table with 28 points. Slot's men are guests at Southampton, the team that occupies the bottom place with only four points.
