On Friday, Nico Williams made a shock about his decision to leave Athletic Club by signing a new contract, so that Barcelona was rinsed in the trial. He also rejected Bayern Munich, who also hoped to get a deal.
Bayern was planning to swing and close a deal for Williams if he decided to join Barcelona, but it did not work for them because he chose to stay with Athletic who he is now contracted until 2035.
The end of the Saga took a lot of surprised, and as confirmed by Uli Hoenß, honorary doctorate of Bayern, they were just as shocked at the Bundesliga champions as those in Barcelona. In conversation with BR24 he spoke about this issue.
“When a club expands its own player, it is nothing unusual. I would have done the same if I was Athletic Club. But we were all surprised that Nico Williams expanded his contract. I had close contact with Hansi Flick, who was currently on vacation in Tegernsee, and they were also surprised because they had more or less agreement with him.
“I don't understand what (Nico) wants, but in my opinion Athletic Club just tries to get more money, because it costs more than € 60 million next year.”
After the snub, Barcelona made it clear that they will never again follow a deal for Williams, who were rejected by him by him in 2024 and 2025. And Hoeneß also confirmed during the interview that Bayern's attitude will be a similar one.
Athletic will not indicate that Williams' decision is being questioned because they are those who can still enjoy his services for 10 years. And the opportunities that a deal will be closed in the future is also unlikely, given that his release clause is not in the region of € 100 million.
