Dustin Poirier called for UFC release and nearly walked away days before his UFC 236 fight with Max Holloway was booked

Dustin Poirier will retire later today from MMA after participating in his last UFC fight.

Poirier will leave an incredible career in the promotion, because fans have seen him go from a debuting prospect to one of the best light weights of all time.

Although the UFC has helped Poirier to give his dream retirement by having him come across from Max Holloway in New Orleans, 'The Diamond' has had various problems with the promotion over the years.

The most recent example is his fight with Benoit Saint Denis on UFC 299, where he initially denied that the fight took place after it was officially announced before he finally came to terms.

There was even a time when we might not see any of his most iconic fights and victories after Poirier became frustrated after missing a matchup with his rival.

Dustin Poirier said that the UFC should release him in 2019 after frustrations with the promotion

After his second fight with Eddie Alvarez in July 2018, Dustin Poirier went into a strange chapter of his UFC career.

'The Diamond' was booked to be confronted against Nate Diaz on UFC 230 and he remained frustrated after the fight did not come together.

Although it turned out that Poirier had withdrawn from the Co-Main Event Matchup, he later clarified that he only decided not to compete on November 3 as soon as he was told that Diaz would not be his opponent.

After he was unhappy with the fighting he was offered around this time, this led to a social media post where Poirier seemed to have hit his breaking point with the promotion.

Only two days after this post he was booked to face Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 236 for the interim light weight title that remains one of the biggest victories of his career.

Poirier discussed this on an interview on the MMA last year, where he thought about the time he had the most conflict with the UFC.

“Probably when I asked to be released before I fought in Atlanta in 2019,” said Poirier. “I don't remember exactly, but they offered fights that I didn't want. I didn't know exactly, but I asked to be released then. In the end I got the maximum fight, so it worked.

“Yes [I was unhappy]And the people they offered me, where my contract was. I don't remember exactly, but that was closest to [done]. “

Dustin Poirier's victory over Max Holloway helped bring his career to new heights

While Dustin Poirier was not successful in uniting the lightweight titles after beating Max Holloway for the second time, his run of fighting was remarkable after UFC 236 was remarkable.

Together with a few setbacks, 'The Diamond' produced some of his most iconic moments with victories over people like Dan Hooker and Conor McGregor.

It is great to see that Poirier receives the legend treatment that he deserves on his way from sport, but it is strange to think that we have hardly gotten what has been six incredible years of his UFC run.
