Dustin Poirier has a GOAT claim in one category according to UFC veteran… ‘Top 5 maybe in history’

A former UFC hunter says that it does not eliminate the failure to win an undisputed title Dustin Poirier from every goat discussion.

Poirier's career in mixed martial arts will end on July 19, when he makes a final Octagon performance for almost two decades after his first professional fight.

Just over a year after his last title challenge, Poirier will retire on UFC 318, the most important event of which will contain its struggle with Max Holloway in a trilogy fight for the symbolic BMF title of the Hawaiianian.

At this point in his career, 'The Diamond' no longer fights for a place in the biggest debate of the lightweight division and will retire without winning the undisputed gold.

But he has another chance to prove that he is the UFC goat in another area …

Matt Brown says that Dustin Poirier can be the goat in 'Warrior' mentality

During a recent episode of MMA Fighting's The Fighter vs. The Writer, former UFC hunter Matt Brown thought about the career of Poirier prior to his farewell in New Orleans.

While 'The Immortal' believes that the lack of an undisputed title 'The Diamond' disqualifies rival people such as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhakev in the general goat debate on 155 pounds, he thinks the Louisianan could surpass another category.

“I would like to see him there (in goat conversation), but we all have our travels,” said Brown. “There are thousands and thousands of hunters who are there – they can't all be number 1. Many of them are really good people, but they can't all be number 1. That is (not winning the title), absolutely the attitude for Dustin unfortunately.

“It is not torn to him, it is just the objective truth. I mean, I know that the way I will remember him is not necessarily one of the greatest, absolutely large. Not one of the biggest. In terms of warriors and warrior mentality, I think he is definitely one of the greatest of all time.

“He probably has to be in the top five when you talk about guys who are willing to fight and keep coming back,” Brown continued. “I think that is a lot from what I am known for, and I put it above me in that respect. I think he is one of the top five, perhaps in the history of only warriors.”

Dustin Poirier period by not winning an undisputed UFC title

Missing the undisputed lightweight throne can go down if the only performance absent in his UFC CV and marking the failure that eliminates him out of goat conversation, but Poirier does not think about it.

During a recent interview with the New York Post, 'The Diamond' recognized the disappointment not to become a champion, but said that this is just part of his story in MMA's largest stage.

“I did everything I could to become undisputed champions,” said Poirier. “I have put myself in position several times to lift my hand and win that belt in the UFC and just fell short.

“I have just been defeated by really good boys, have made mistakes, and it is what it is. That is life; that is my story,” Poirier added.
