Dustin Poirier reveals that Mateusz Gamrot accidentally broke two of his ribs for UFC 302
In a recent interview with ESPN MMA, Dustin Poirier openly spoke about some of the setbacks he conquered in his career that he has never spoken publicly before.
'The Diamond' claimed that he came to his UFC 302 fight with Islam Makhachev who was seriously in danger after an injury in the training in the last phases of his preparations.
While the challenger eventually had a considerable amount of success against the former pound-for-pound number one before he was submitted in the fifth round, his broken ribs did not help him.
Poirier clearly spent a lot of time working on his wrestling prior to his lightweight title fight, with his teammate, Mateusz Gamrot, an invaluable training partner for this specific camp.
Training with another of the best contenders in the division, however, eventually led to an injury, although Poirier quickly points out that it was a complete accident.
“My last fight, the Islam fight, I had two broken ribs that went into the fight and I knew it would be a wrestling grind. My wife wanted me to pull the fight back, Mike Brown (head coach) wanted me to stop from the fight, but I couldn't do it. Yes.
“Gamrot broke my ribs like just before the Vechtweek. It was an accident, however, how crazy [is] It was an arm bar. It was just that my arm was pulled weird and I loved a lifter, I tried to roll out and then my ribs just came up. “
Dustin Poirier reveals that he defeated Max Holloway in their rematch after another important injury
Another of the important injuries from the past that Dustin Poirier revealed during his interview was a factor for UFC 236.
In the main event, 'The Diamond' faced Max Holloway in a Rematch that was seven years after their first meeting.
The two men produced one of the best UFC title fights of all time, so Poirier claimed the interim light weight belt after winning a unanimous decision.
Despite the impressive victory of Poirier, whom he will try to replicate in his last fight on UFC 318, another freak accident led him to be confronted against adversity before he even got into the Octagon.
“I had a torn biceps. I don't know if anyone ever noticed, but just like between the rounds I shake my arm. I threw a slap and a man blocked and missed my arm and showed the scans as a slice. It was not a torn biceps, it cut my muscle if someone was bijt, all the blood.”
