It was perhaps a good thing that the UFC did not give Dustin Poirier's wishes for his upcoming farewell.
Poirier's career as an active hunter will draw his conclusion on Saturday evening, while retiring a final trip in the Octagon near his house in Louisiana.
For his last outing, Poirier Max Holloway challenges UFC 318 for the symbolic BMF title. The competition will mark the third in their series, after 'The Diamond' the victory from the fighting has been one and two in 2012 and 2019 respectively.
But although that is an appropriate assignment for the Fans' favorite to continue, that is not the trilogy fight that Poirier originally had in mind.
Dustin Poirier happy to escape inevitable damage from Justin Gaethje -Trilogy
During a recent performance at the Danza Project Podcast, Poirier looked ahead to his pension fight at UFC 318 and spoke about how it came together. 'The Diamond' had his wish for the farewell to take place in his home state, where the UFC has not visited for more than ten years, but not all requests from Poirier flourished.
Poirier previously revealed that he had asked to finish his series with Justin Gaethje. After the Louisianan had the victory from their memorable first battle, Gaethje Poirier hit UFC 291 to demand his revenge and conquer the BMF belt.
Although their 1-1 Scorelijn would usually borrow themselves for a rubber match, Poirier is now satisfied with the leave of things to have seen what Gaethje had to say about this.
“Originally, when I told them I wanted to retire, I wanted to fight Justin,” said Poirier. “We are 1-1. I did not want to end my career as 1-1, leaving that kind of open behind.
“I wanted a rubber match. I wanted anyone to be on someone. I wanted to get my step back. I took it out, he hit me out … We have to do it again.
“When this fight started to come together, my retirement plans, he was booked to fight against then hooker,” Poirier continued. “I wanted to fight Justin … Then I saw him doing an interview and he said,” You know what, if Dustin thinks it's 1-1, I am good with it. Let's shake hands with it. Our families don't (for) earn a new collision. “
“I never thought about it that way. I had something like that:” Do you know what? If he's good with it, I like it. ” If you say it, someone will be wounded.
Dustin Poirier could have made featherweight for his last fight
Poirier got on the scale on Friday and successfully made weight for his farewell fight in New Orleans.
'The Diamond', who will finish his career after he has never missed weight, claimed during the UFC 318-way show that his cut was so good that he could even have touched the limit of his old division.
“This was the easiest weight movement,” said Poirier. “I could probably have been (went back to featherweight).”
The Louisianan started his Octagon career on 145 pounds, where losses for Chan Sung Jung and Cub Swanson blocked his planned turnout by the ranks.
The defeat of Poirier against Conor McGregor in 2014 eventually led to a switch to lightweight that has certainly proved to be fertile for the Fans' favorite.
