Dustin Poirier took an unexpected hit after he was eliminated by Justin Gaethje on UFC 291.
The always entertaining lightweight duo met in a long-awaited rematch for the BMF title in July 2023.
Dustin Poirier stopped 'the highlight' with strikes in the fourth round of their bloody first fight seven years ago – but Justin Gaethje got revenge when he slept 'The Diamond' with a main kick on UFC 291.

Veteran referee Herb Dean did everything he could to prevent Poirier from taking extra photos on UFC 291.
The funny thing is that Dean eventually finally struck the former interim champion with an extra blow when he fell as he ran inside to save him.
Fans quickly indicated that he landed on Poirier in a way that reminded them of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and his characteristic WWE -Finisher.
“He's actually done with Poirier with the elbow of the people,” a fan joked. While another added: “When Herb Dean tells you from the start to always protect yourself, he means it …”
“The elbow of the people,” someone else said.
“Dude dropped the 'people elbow' on him,” laughed a fourth fan.
“Herb who drops the elbow of the people,” this fan noted.
“Tribute from Herb Dean to the Rock with the elbowfinisher of these people,” said a sixth X user.
What is the next step for Dustin Poirier?
Gaethje lost his BMF title when Max Holloway hit him with a second to the left of their UFC 300 fight last April.
The 36-year-old returns on Saturday evening to the Octagon against Rafael Fiziev on UFC 313 in Las Vegas.
In the meantime, Poirier has not fought since he was suffocated in June last June by lightweight Islam Makhachev on UFC 302.
The 40-Vecht veteran retired before he confirmed that he will return for a final UFC fight.
Poirier recently revealed a likely date and the 'incredible' location for the last fight of his epic career.
“It's summer. Probably July or August. We work on UFC New Orleans, “Poirier told MMA Fighting.
'I try to retire in my home. The UFC has not been there since 2015. I also fought on the map. I fought against Yancy Mediros, but that was the last time I had to fight at home. To retire where it all started in Louisiana would be incredible to me and my career. “
Poirier says there is still work to book a suitable dance partner after he was standing on 'only legends'.
He added to his potential opponent: 'Not completely yet. Still working on a few things. “
